Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West
Overview
Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West is a campaign-style legacy game that takes players on a journey across the expanding American frontier. Over 12 interconnected games, players build railway networks westward as the map physically changes with stickers, new routes, and unlockable content. Decisions made in earlier games permanently affect future sessions. The core mechanic is Ticket to Ride’s familiar route-claiming system, enhanced with legacy elements including evolving rules, secret envelopes, and a persistent scoring system.
Components
- 1 Game board (evolving with stickers over the campaign)
- 200+ Train car miniatures (in 5 player colors)
- Train car cards (color-coded with locomotive wilds)
- Destination ticket cards (changing throughout the campaign)
- Legacy deck (sealed cards revealed at specific times)
- Sticker sheets (permanently modify the board)
- Secret envelopes (opened when triggered)
- Achievement cards
- Character cards with unique abilities
- Score sheets for campaign tracking
- Rulebook (some rules may change during play)
Setup
- Read the entire rulebook before the first game (some rules differ from standard Ticket to Ride).
- Set up the game board and initial routes as described in the first session’s instructions.
- Each player chooses a character card with unique abilities.
- Deal train car cards and destination tickets per session rules.
- Apply any stickers or modifications from previous sessions.
- Open any legacy deck cards as instructed.
Turn Structure
On each turn, perform ONE action:
1. Draw Train Car Cards
Take 2 cards from the face-up display or deck. Taking a face-up locomotive counts as your entire turn.
2. Claim a Route
Play matching train car cards equal to the route’s length. Place train cars on the route. Score points immediately.
3. Draw Destination Tickets
Draw tickets and keep at least 1. Uncompleted tickets subtract points at game end.
4. Legacy Actions
Certain game states trigger legacy events: open envelopes, apply stickers, unlock new rules, or gain achievements.
Actions
Core actions follow standard Ticket to Ride rules with legacy additions:
- Claim Routes: Standard color-matching card play.
- Character Abilities: Each character has unique powers that may affect drawing, claiming, or scoring.
- Achievements: Meet specific conditions during a session to earn permanent bonuses.
- Legacy Events: Triggered by specific conditions (e.g., first player to reach a certain city, specific route claimed). These introduce new rules, modify existing ones, or unlock content.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Per Session:
- Points from claimed routes
- Completed destination tickets (add points)
- Incomplete destination tickets (subtract points)
- Session-specific bonus scoring (varies by game)
- Achievement bonuses
Campaign Scoring:
- Each session’s score is recorded on the campaign sheet.
- Cumulative score across all 12 sessions determines the overall winner.
- Legacy achievements and stickers provide ongoing scoring benefits.
The player with the highest cumulative score after all 12 sessions wins the campaign.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Permanent Changes: Stickers placed on the board and cards opened during the campaign permanently modify the game. These changes cannot be reversed.
- Character Progression: Characters may gain new abilities or modifications as the campaign progresses.
- Rule Evolution: The rulebook itself may change as new rules are introduced or old ones modified through legacy cards.
- Session Independence: While the campaign tracks cumulative scores, each session can be enjoyed independently. New players can join mid-campaign with catch-up mechanics.
- Replayability: The game is designed for a single campaign playthrough. Once completed, the modified board and rules create a unique final state.
- Spoiler Sensitivity: Do not open envelopes or read legacy cards until instructed. The campaign experience depends on discovery.
- Missing Sessions: If a player misses a session, their score for that session is the average of other players’ scores.
- Route Claiming Changes: As the campaign progresses, new route types and claiming rules may be introduced through legacy events.
