Riddle of the Ring
Overview
Riddle of the Ring is a card-driven board game for 2-8 players based on The Lord of the Rings. Players take the roles of either Hobbits or Black Riders in a quest across Middle-earth. Hobbit players try to bring the One Ring to the Cracks of Doom and destroy it, while Black Rider players attempt to bring the Ring to Barad-dur for Sauron. The game combines map movement, card play, hand management, and combat as players race across the board while using Power Plays to manipulate each other’s hands and execute battles.
Components
- 1 Game board (map of Middle-earth)
- Character cards (4 Hobbits, 4 Black Riders)
- Playing cards (multi-purpose: tools, movement aids, combat cards)
- The One Ring token
- Character tokens/miniatures
- Dice
Setup
- Place the Middle-earth game board in the center.
- Players are divided into two teams: Hobbits and Black Riders.
- Each player selects a character and places their token on its starting location.
- Shuffle all playing cards and deal 2 cards to each player.
- Place remaining cards face-down as a draw pile.
- The One Ring starts with one of the Hobbit players (as determined by the rules).
Turn Structure
Each player’s turn consists of the following phases:
- Movement Phase: Move your character on the map. Movement costs are determined by terrain type. The map generally hinders movement but provides locations to draw cards.
- Friendly Exchanges: Trade cards with allied players in the same location.
- Power Plays: Execute one or more Power Play actions against other players.
- Draw Cards: Draw cards from the draw pile or from specific map locations.
Actions
Power Plays
- Look at Another Player’s Hand: Peek at the cards held by another player.
- Take a Card: Steal a specific card from another player’s hand.
- Battle: Initiate combat against another player in the same location. Both players play combat cards; the higher total wins.
- Pass the Ring: The Ring-bearer may pass the One Ring to another allied character in the same location.
Other Actions
- Move: Travel across the map between locations. Different terrain types have different movement costs.
- Draw Cards: Collect new cards from the draw pile or special locations.
- Trade Cards: Exchange cards with friendly players at the same location.
- Use Tools: Play tool cards for movement bonuses, combat advantages, or terrain traversal.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- Hobbit Victory: A Hobbit player carries the One Ring to the Cracks of Doom and survives for one full turn.
- Black Rider Victory: A Black Rider player carries the One Ring to Barad-dur and survives for one full turn.
- Ring Possession: The Ring can change hands through combat (battle Power Plays). Either side can seize the Ring.
- The game is cooperative within each team but competitive between Hobbits and Black Riders.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Ring-Bearer: Only the character carrying the Ring can deliver it to the destination. If the Ring-bearer is defeated in combat, the Ring may pass to the victor.
- One Turn Survival: After reaching the destination (Cracks of Doom or Barad-dur), the Ring-bearer must survive for one complete turn before victory is confirmed.
- Cross-Team Combat: Hobbits and Black Riders can battle each other when in the same location.
- Card Types: Cards serve multiple purposes – they can be tools for movement, weapons for combat, or used in Power Plays. Managing your hand is critical.
- Terrain: Mountains, forests, rivers, and other terrain affect movement costs and may provide strategic advantages.
- Large Player Count: With 2-8 players, the game scales by having more characters on each team.
- Power Play Limits: Players may have a limited number of Power Plays per turn, forcing prioritization.
