Return to Dark Tower
Overview
Return to Dark Tower is a cooperative (or competitive) adventure game for 1-4 players published by Restoration Games. It is a sequel to the 1981 Milton Bradley classic Dark Tower. Players take the role of heroes who must gather resources, cleanse buildings, defeat monsters, and undertake quests to build their strength and ultimately identify and defeat the foe inhabiting the Dark Tower. The game features a Bluetooth-powered, app-enabled motorized tower at the center of the board that dispenses corruption, controls events, and drives the narrative. The companion app manages the game state, tower events, and enemy behavior.
Components
- 1 Motorized app-enabled tower (12 inches tall, 3 rotation levels, 16 LEDs, speaker, infrared sensors; requires 3 AA batteries)
- 1 Game board (circular, divided into 4 kingdoms)
- 4 Player boards
- Hero miniatures
- Monster miniatures
- Skull tokens (corruption)
- Building seals (removed when buildings are cleansed)
- Quest tokens
- Resource tokens (warriors, spirits, gold)
- Virtue tokens
- Gear cards
- Companion app (required)
Setup
- Place the Tower upright in the center of the game board.
- Insert batteries and connect the Tower to the companion app via Bluetooth.
- Each player selects a hero and takes their miniature and player board.
- Each player is assigned a home kingdom (North, East, South, or West).
- Press “Start New Game” in the app; the app guides remaining setup.
- The app assigns starting quests, places buildings, and initializes the Tower.
Turn Structure
The game is split into 6 months. At the start of each month, 2 quests are assigned. Each player’s turn consists of:
- Heroic Action: Perform one major action (see Actions below).
- Tower Response: The app/Tower responds with events, corruption drops, enemy spawns, or other effects.
- Resolve Effects: Handle any corruption, battles, or events triggered by the Tower.
- End Turn: Pass to the next player.

Scoring / Victory Conditions
- Win: Identify and defeat the foe inhabiting the Dark Tower. This requires:
- Complete enough quests to unlock the Tower’s secrets.
- Gather sufficient resources and virtues to challenge the foe.
- Enter the Tower and win the final confrontation (managed by the app).
- Lose:
- Corruption overwhelms a kingdom (too many skulls).
- A critical event is not resolved in time.
- All heroes are defeated.
- The Tower’s countdown expires.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- App Required: The companion app is mandatory for play. It manages the Tower, events, enemy AI, quests, and the final battle.
- Tower Mechanics: The physical Tower rotates, drops skulls (corruption), lights up, and plays sounds. It is controlled entirely by the app.
- Corruption: The Tower periodically drops skull tokens into the game board. If corruption is not cleansed, it spreads and can overwhelm kingdoms.
- Cooperative vs. Competitive: The game can be played fully cooperative or in a competitive variant where players compete for the most glory.
- Multiple Foes: Different games feature different foes in the Tower, each with unique mechanics and challenges.
- Gear Cards: Powerful items that provide one-time or ongoing bonuses.
- Virtues: Special abilities earned by completing quests and performing heroic deeds.
- Kingdom Borders: Moving between kingdoms requires crossing rivers, which costs resources.
