Overview
Second Season Pro Football Game (published by Replay Publishing) is a statistical sports simulation board game that recreates professional football. The game uses dice rolls and a meticulously designed game book of charts to produce results that closely mirror real professional football. Every player from All-Pros to third-string rookies is individually rated. The game was designed primarily for solitaire play (one person handling both teams) but also supports head-to-head play between two coaches.
Components
- 1 Spiral-bound game book (charts and tables)
- 2 Six-sided dice (one black for tens, one white for units)
- Team rosters with individual player ratings
- Score sheets
- Game record sheets
Setup
- Select two teams to compete.
- Open the game book to the appropriate charts for the selected teams.
- Set up score sheets for tracking the game progress.
- Determine which player (if head-to-head) coaches which team.
- Roll for kickoff to begin the game.
Turn Structure
Each play follows this sequence:
- Offensive Play Selection: The offensive player (or solo player) selects a play type and designates a target player/receiver.
- Defensive Selection: The defensive alignment is determined by a die roll (solitaire) or chosen by the opposing player (head-to-head).
- Play Resolution: Roll both dice and consult the game book charts. Cross-reference the play type, target player’s rating, and die result to determine the outcome.
- Apply Results: Record the play result (gain, loss, completion, incompletion, fumble, interception, penalty, etc.).
- Continue Drive: Repeat until the drive ends (score, punt, turnover, end of half).
Actions
- Run Play: Call a rushing play targeting a specific running back. Results vary based on the runner’s rating and blocking.
- Pass Play: Call a passing play to a designated receiver. Consult passing charts for completion, interception, or incompletion.
- Kick (Punt/Field Goal): Attempt a punt or field goal using the kicker’s rating.
- Kickoff: Start or restart play with a kickoff.
- Special Teams: Returns, onside kicks, and other special teams plays have their own charts.
- Penalties: Random penalty results are integrated into the chart outcomes.
- Time Management: Clock management decisions (timeouts, hurry-up, clock-killing) affect play selection.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- Standard football scoring: Touchdown (6 points + extra point/2-point conversion), Field Goal (3 points), Safety (2 points).
- The team with the most points at the end of four quarters wins.
- Overtime rules apply if the game is tied at the end of regulation.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Individual Ratings: Every player on the roster is individually rated for their ability to contribute, making team composition critical.
- Injuries: The game includes an injury system; players can be injured during plays and miss subsequent action.
- Fumbles and Interceptions: Turnovers are determined by chart results and can dramatically shift momentum.
- Penalties: Integrated into play results; include holding, offsides, pass interference, etc.
- Weather Effects: Optional rules for weather conditions that affect passing, kicking, and fumble frequency.
- Solitaire Design: The defensive selection by die roll creates a realistic opponent in solitaire mode.
- Realistic Events: Charts include rare events like unruly fan removals, forgotten plays requiring timeouts, and other football occurrences.
