Rebirth
Overview
Rebirth is a tile-laying board game designed by Reiner Knizia, published by Mighty Boards. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where civilization is being rebuilt in harmony with nature, players take on the roles of Scottish clan leaders competing to restore the land and control prestigious castles. Each turn, players draw a tile and place it strategically on the board to build Energy Farms, grow Food Farms, establish Settlements, complete Private Missions, gain control of Castles, and open Ports. The game features a double-sided board (Scotland/Ireland for advanced play) and rewards strategic foresight.
Components
- 1 Double-sided game board (Scotland / Ireland)
- Terrain tiles (Energy Farms, Food Farms, Settlements, etc.)
- Castle tokens
- Port tokens
- Private Mission cards
- Cathedral spaces
- Player markers
- Score track
Setup
- Place the game board Scotland-side up (or Ireland for advanced mode).
- Shuffle the terrain tiles and create a supply for each player.
- Deal Private Mission cards to each player (kept secret).
- Place Castle tokens and Port markers on their designated board positions.
- Each player selects a color and places their score marker on the track.
- Determine the starting player.
Turn Structure
On each turn:
- Draw a Tile: Take a tile from your supply.
- Place the Tile: Place the tile on an empty space on the board, following placement rules.
- Score Immediate Points: If the placement completes an area, scores a Castle majority, or opens a Port, gain points immediately.
- Collect Mission (optional): If your tile is adjacent to a Cathedral, you may collect a new Private Mission card.
Actions
- Place Tile: Position a terrain tile on the board. Valid placements must be adjacent to previously placed tiles.
- Build Energy Farms: Place energy farm tiles to score points for connected energy infrastructure.
- Grow Food Farms: Place food farm tiles for agricultural scoring.
- Establish Settlements: Create settlement areas for population-based scoring.
- Claim Castles: Castles are claimed by the player with the majority of connected tiles around them when the castle area is completed.
- Open Ports: Complete port areas for bonus points.
- Complete Missions: Fulfill the conditions on your Private Mission cards for additional points.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Points are earned for:
- Energy Farms: Points based on the size of connected energy farm areas.
- Food Farms: Points based on the size of connected food farm areas.
- Settlements: Points for settlement areas built.
- Castles: The player with the majority of tiles around a completed Castle scores bonus points.
- Ports: Points for opening Ports by completing their surrounding area.
- Private Missions: Bonus points for completed Private Mission cards collected from Cathedrals.
The game ends when all tiles have been placed or no more valid placements exist. The player with the most points wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Castle Majority: A Castle is scored when its surrounding area is fully enclosed. The player with the most tiles adjacent to it claims the Castle bonus. Ties result in no player claiming the Castle.
- Cathedral Missions: Private Missions can only be collected when placing a tile adjacent to a Cathedral space.
- Advanced Mode (Ireland): The Ireland side of the board offers a more challenging map layout with different scoring opportunities.
- Tile Placement: Tiles must be placed adjacent to at least one previously placed tile. The first tile of the game may be placed on any valid starting position.
- No Tile Rotation Restrictions: Tiles may be placed in any orientation.
