Rat Hot is a two-player tile-laying game in which two spice dealers share a storehouse with hungry rats. Players take turns drawing and placing 3x1 tiles to build a shared layout, stacking tiles so that upper tiles partially obscure those underneath. The goal is to create visible combinations of hot spices while covering up the rats. If a rat is left visible in a dangerous configuration, a player loses immediately. The game features fast play, easy rules, and the risk of sudden death.
Components
3x1 Tiles showing combinations of spices and rats
Rulebook
Setup
Shuffle all tiles face-down to form a draw pile.
Determine the starting player.
Leave an open area on the table for the tile layout.
Turn Structure
On each turn:
Draw Tiles: Draw 2 tiles from the face-down pile.
Place Tiles: Add the drawn tiles to the existing layout, one at a time. Tiles are placed so they partially overlap previous tiles in the layout. Each 3x1 tile covers parts of the tiles underneath.
Check for Rats: After placement, check if any dangerous rat configurations are visible. If so, the active player loses immediately.
Actions
Draw: Take 2 tiles from the draw pile.
Place: Position each tile on the layout so it overlaps existing tiles. The upper tiles obscure some parts of the tiles underneath.
Stack: Tiles must be placed following the stacking rules, partially covering lower tiles.
Score Spices: Visible hot spice combinations score points for the player who placed them.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Players score points by creating visible combinations of hot spices on the layout.
Instant Loss: If a player’s placement results in too many visible rats, that player loses immediately.
If the draw pile is exhausted without either player triggering an instant loss, the player with the higher spice score wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
Stacking Rule: Upper tiles must always partially overlap lower tiles; tiles cannot be placed in isolation once the layout has begun.
Sudden Death: The risk of immediate loss from exposed rats creates tension in every placement decision.
Tile Orientation: Tiles may be rotated and placed in any valid overlapping position.
Draw Pile Empty: If neither player has lost when tiles run out, final scoring determines the winner.
