Overview
Pirate and Traveler is a classic board game by Milton Bradley (first published in 1911) where players travel the world collecting treasures by visiting cities, then become pirates racing to bury their treasures and reach the Pirate’s Goal. The game has two halves: collecting treasures as a traveler, and burying them as a pirate.
Components
- 1 game board (world map with routes and cities)
- 24 city treasure cards (divided into 3 parts each)
- Player pieces (colored pawns)
- Spinner (numbered wheel for movement)
- Player destination piles
Setup
- Shuffle the 24 city treasure cards and place them face-down on the Draw Pile space near the top of the game board.
- Each player takes a colored pawn and places it on the starting city.
- High roll of the spinner goes first; play continues clockwise.
Turn Structure
Phase 1: Collecting Treasures (Traveler Phase)
- Each player draws a card from the Draw Pile. Each card has 3 parts:
- Top: the destination city
- Middle: the treasure’s money value
- Bottom: the city where the treasure must be buried
- Players spin the spinner and move that many spaces along any route toward their destination city.
- A player may move off the board on one side and re-enter on the other side via routes marked with matching symbols.
- When a player reaches their destination (by exact count or over), their turn ends. The card is placed in their completion pile.
- Play continues until the last card is drawn and all cards in the destination areas are removed.
Phase 2: Burying Treasures (Pirate Phase)
After the first half ends, players yell “Pirates All!” All players are now pirates.
- Pirates proceed to bury their treasures by journeying to the burial city shown on each card (bottom of card).
- Journeys must be made in the order the cards were collected (top card first).
- When a player reaches their burial city, they take the card from the pile (they need not reach the exact count).
- A player scores the money value shown in the center of each card successfully buried.
- The player with the highest total money value of buried treasures is the WINNER.
Actions
- Spin and Move: Spin the numbered wheel and move that many spaces along marked paths in any chosen direction.
- Collect Treasure: Upon reaching a destination city, place the matching card in your completion pile.
- Bury Treasure: Upon reaching a burial city during the pirate phase, score the card’s value.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
When the completion cards are gone, the game ends. The player with the highest total money value of buried treasures wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- A player may move off the board from one side and re-enter on the other side via designated routes.
- The order of burial must match the order of collection.
- A player does not need to reach the exact burial city count; reaching or passing it is sufficient.
- When a player is out of completion cards in the pirate phase, they remain as pirates for the rest of the game.
