Overview

Piece o’ Cake is a cake-dividing game where one player cuts and the others choose. Over 5 rounds, players divide cakes into pieces and decide whether to eat slices immediately for guaranteed points or collect them for a potentially larger bonus at game end.

Components

Setup

  1. Mix all 57 cake slices and form 5 face-down stacks of 11 slices each.
  2. Set the 2 remaining slices aside face down (unused).
  3. Choose a starting player who becomes the first “server.”

Turn Structure

Each round, one player is the server:

  1. Serve the cake: The server draws 11 slices from a stack and places them face up in a circle, maintaining their stack order.
  2. Divide the cake: The server divides the circle into at most as many pieces as there are players. Pieces can contain any number of slices (even just 1). The order of slices cannot be changed. With 2 players, the cake may be divided into 4 pieces with alternating picks.
  3. Choose pieces: Starting with the player to the server’s left, each player either:
    • Takes a piece and decides for each slice whether to eat it or collect it, OR
    • Forfeits taking a piece and instead eats all collected slices of one variety.
  4. The server chooses last. Any remaining slices are removed from the game.
  5. The next player clockwise becomes the new server.

Actions

Eating a Slice

Flip the slice face down. It scores points equal to the number of whipped cream dollops shown (1-3 points). Eaten slices cannot be lost.

Collecting a Slice

Place the slice face up in front of you, grouped by variety. Collected slices score only at game end and only if you have the majority in that variety.

Forfeiting

Instead of choosing a piece, you may eat all collected slices of one variety (flip them face down for their whipped cream value). You do NOT take a piece this round.

Scoring / Victory Conditions

After all 5 cakes have been served:

Collected slices: For each variety, the player with the most slices of that variety scores points equal to the number printed on the slices (which equals the total number of slices of that variety in the game: 3-11 points). Ties award full points to all tied players. Players without the majority score 0 for that variety.

Eaten slices: Each eaten slice scores its whipped cream dollop value (1-3 points).

Total points = Majority bonuses + Eaten slice points. Highest score wins.

Variety Total Slices Majority Bonus Dollops per Slice
Plum 3 3 points 1
Apricot 4 4 points 1
Cherry 5 5 points 1
Blackberry 7 7 points 2
Kiwi 8 8 points 2
Gooseberry 9 9 points 2
Strawberry 10 10 points 2
Chocolate 11 11 points 3
