Odin’s Ravens

Overview

Odin’s Ravens is a two-player racing card game where each player controls one of Odin’s ravens (Huginn and Muninn) racing around a path of land cards. Players use flight cards matching landscape types to advance their raven and Loki (trickster) cards to manipulate the path or hinder their opponent. The first raven to complete the circuit wins.

Components

Setup

  1. Shuffle the land cards and lay out a line of 16 cards between the players. Each card has two spaces forming two parallel routes.
  2. Ensure no two consecutive spaces on the same route share the same land type. If they do, rotate the card 180 degrees. If still matching, replace the card.
  3. Place remaining land cards face down as a deck nearby.
  4. Both players place their ravens at one end, each in front of one route.
  5. Each player takes their 25 flight cards and 8 Loki cards, shuffles them separately into two face-down draw piles.
  6. Each player draws 5 cards (from either pile in any combination) as their starting hand.
  7. The player who lost the last race goes first.

Turn Structure

On your turn:

  1. Play cards from your hand – as many or as few as you like (flight cards and/or Loki cards).
  2. Draw 3 cards from either draw pile in any combination to end your turn.
  3. If you have more than 7 cards after drawing, discard down to 7 (flight cards go to discard pile; Loki cards are removed from the game).

Actions

Flight

Play a flight card matching the land type of the next space in front of your raven. Your raven advances to that space. If multiple consecutive spaces ahead share the same land type, one matching flight card moves your raven through all of them.

Wild movement: If you have no matching flight card, play any 2 flight cards of the same type as a substitute for any single flight card you need.

When a raven reaches the last land card, it switches to the other route and flies back to the start.

Trickery (Loki Cards)

Each Loki card offers 2 action options; choose one. Once used, Loki cards are removed from the game permanently (max 8 uses per player per game). There are 4 types:

Loki Card Option A Option B
Type 1 Move your raven 1 space forward (any land type) Move the other raven 1 space backward
Type 2 Rotate a land card 180 degrees Remove a land card (shortens both paths by 1 space)
Type 3 Swap any two land cards (no rotation) Slide one land card by one space (changes one path, shortens the other)
Type 4 Draw 2 extra cards from either pile Place a new land card from the deck alongside a flight path as a loop (extending that path)

Restrictions: Actions that move or rotate land cards cannot target a card with a raven on it. Partially covered cards (from sliding/loops) cannot be moved.

Scoring / Victory Conditions

The game ends when a raven moves into the final space on the opponent’s side (completing the circuit). That player wins.

First-player balance: If the first player finishes, the second player gets one more turn. If both finish, the player with the most cards remaining in hand wins. If still tied, play again.
