Mysterium Kids: Captain Echo’s Treasure
Overview
Mysterium Kids is a cooperative game where players explore a haunted mansion to find Captain Echo’s treasure. Each round, one player becomes the Ghost and uses a tambourine to give sound clues about a specific Noise card. The other players must guess which card the Ghost is indicating. Correct guesses reveal treasure tiles. Players must find enough treasure before the moon crosses the sky.
Components
- 1 Manor board (5 rooms)
- 1 Round Marker board (double-sided: Calm / Stormy)
- 1 Moon token
- 78 Noise cards
- 10 Treasure tiles (7 without symbol, 3 with symbol for hard mode)
- 5 Ghost tokens (numbered)
- 1 tambourine
Setup
- Place the Manor board in the middle of the table.
- Place the Round Marker board (Calm side up) directly above the Manor board. Place the Moon token on the leftmost space.
- Shuffle Noise cards and place 1 face up in each of the Manor’s 5 rooms. Place remaining cards as a face-down deck.
- Mix the 7 standard Treasure tiles face down in a stack. Return the 3 symbol tiles to the box (or include them for hard mode).
- The oldest player takes the 5 Ghost tokens and the tambourine, becoming the first Ghost.
Turn Structure
Each round:
- Ghost draws a token: The Ghost mixes the 5 Ghost tokens, secretly draws 1, and notes its number (indicating which room’s Noise card to communicate).
- Ghost gives clues: Players close their eyes. The Ghost says “Boooo,” uses the tambourine to make sounds representing the target Noise card, then says “Boooo” again.
- Players discuss: Players open their eyes, discuss what they heard, and agree on which Noise card (room) the Ghost was indicating.
- Reveal: The Ghost shows the Ghost token. If the number matches the players’ chosen card, flip the top Treasure tile (treasure found!). If wrong, no treasure this round.
- End of round: Advance the Moon token 1 space. Return all Noise cards on the Manor board to the box. Pass the tambourine and tokens to the next player (clockwise).
- The new Ghost reveals 5 fresh Noise cards for the next round.
Two-Card Rounds
Some Moon spaces show two cards instead of one. In these rounds, the Ghost draws 2 Ghost tokens and gives tambourine clues for both cards (in order). Players must guess both correctly to earn treasure.
Actions
Ghost Clues
The Ghost can use any sound technique with the tambourine: scratching, banging, tapping, sliding, rhythms, using different textures. The Ghost cannot speak or gesture during clue-giving.
Treasure Tiles
Some treasure tiles show half of a larger treasure. When both halves are found, combine them.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Win: Players find all required treasure before the Moon reaches the end of its track.
Lose: The Moon reaches the final space and not enough treasure has been found.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Stormy mode (hard): Use the Stormy side of the Round Marker board and include the 3 symbol Treasure tiles. This increases the number of tiles needed and may have more two-card rounds.
- For younger players who struggle with closing eyes, they may simply turn around during clue-giving.
- The Ghost must not speak or give visual hints during the clue phase.
- If players cannot agree on a card, the player to the Ghost’s left makes the final decision.
