Mr. Jack in New York
Overview
Mr. Jack in New York is a standalone sequel to Mr. Jack, set on Manhattan island. One player is Jack hiding among 8 suspects; the other is the Detective trying to unmask him. The game features a hex-based Manhattan board with new mechanics including informant tokens, gas lamps, and an exit system. The core deduction mechanism remains: after activating characters, Jack declares visible or invisible, and the Detective eliminates suspects.
Components
- 1 game board (Manhattan island with hex grid and turn track)
- 8 double-sided character tokens (Suspect / Innocent)
- 8 character cards
- 8 alibi cards
- 1 witness card
- 1 round counter
- Gaslight tiles
- Informant tokens
- Police cordons/barricades
Setup
- Place the Manhattan board and set up characters in starting positions.
- Place gaslights, informants, and barricades as indicated.
- All 8 character tokens start Suspect side up.
- Jack draws 1 alibi card (secret identity).
- Set round counter to 1.
Turn Structure
Follows the same structure as the original Mr. Jack:
- Character Selection: 4 characters per round, selected alternately (1/2/1 split between Detective and Jack, alternating who starts on odd/even rounds).
- Character Activation: Move and use special abilities.
- Witness Call: Jack declares Visible or Invisible.
- Elimination: Flip characters that contradict Jack’s declaration to Innocent.
Actions
Visibility
- Visible: On a hex adjacent to a lit gaslight, or adjacent to another character.
- Invisible: Not lit and not adjacent to any character.
New York-Specific Mechanics
- Informant tokens: Characters can pick up informants for special effects.
- New character abilities: Each of the 8 New York characters has unique powers different from the original game.
- Manhattan exits: Jack must reach specific edge hexes while invisible to escape.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Detective wins: Only 1 suspect remains after a witness call.
Jack wins: Escapes Manhattan through an exit while invisible, OR survives through round 8 with multiple suspects remaining.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Compatible in spirit with the original Mr. Jack but fully standalone with different characters and board.
- The turn track determines who selects characters first each round.
- All original deduction principles apply: visibility determination, character flipping, and escape mechanics.
