Mountain Goats
Overview
Mountain Goats is a dice-rolling game where players race their goats up 6 numbered mountains (5-10) to claim point tokens from the summit. Players roll 4 dice, group them into sums, and move goats up the matching mountains. Reaching the top earns a point token and bumps any opponent’s goat back to the base. Collecting tokens from all 6 mountains earns bonus points.
Components
- 6 mountain cards: 4x mountain 5, 4x mountain 6, 3x mountain 7, 3x mountain 8, 2x mountain 9, 2x mountain 10
- 57 point tokens: 12x 5pt, 11x 6pt, 10x 7pt, 9x 8pt, 8x 9pt, 7x 10pt
- 4 bonus point tokens: 15pt, 12pt, 9pt, 6pt
- 24 mountain goats (6 per player)
- 4 dice
Setup
- Lay out mountain cards in ascending order (5 through 10).
- Stack point tokens at the top of their respective mountains.
- Lay out the 4 bonus tokens (15, 12, 9, 6).
- Each player places 1 goat at the foot of each mountain.
- 3 players: Remove 1 point token from each mountain. 2 players: Remove 2 point tokens from each mountain.
Turn Structure
- Roll all 4 dice.
- If you rolled more than one “1”, you may re-set all but one “1” to any face.
- Group dice into any combination of groups (each group can have any number of dice).
- For each group, move your goat 1 space up the mountain matching that group’s sum (5-10 only). Groups that sum outside 5-10 do nothing.
- Pass dice to the left.
Actions
Moving Goats
- Each dice group matching a mountain number (5-10) moves your goat 1 space up that mountain.
- Multiple goats can share the same non-summit space.
- Reaching the summit: Take 1 point token from that mountain (if available). Any opponent goat already at the top is returned to the mountain’s base.
- Already at the summit: If a dice group matches a mountain where your goat is already at the top, claim 1 point token from that mountain’s supply (if available) without moving.
Bonus Tokens
When you collect at least 1 point token from each of the 6 mountains, claim the highest available bonus token. Additional complete sets earn additional bonus tokens.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The game ends when all 4 bonus tokens are claimed OR 3 mountains have no remaining point tokens. Finish the round so all players have equal turns.
Total all point tokens and bonus tokens. Highest score wins.
Tiebreaker: Most goats on mountain tops. If still tied, the goat on the higher-numbered mountain wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Only the summit is exclusive (1 goat only); all other spaces may hold multiple goats.
- You cannot choose NOT to move if a valid group exists; however, you can always create groups that don’t sum to 5-10 if you prefer not to move certain mountains.
- Point tokens are awarded only if the mountain’s supply is not empty.
