Morris the Dodo
Overview
Morris the Dodo is a cooperative dexterity game for young children (ages 3+). Players work together to help Morris the Dodo slide down a waterfall carrying eggs, hiding them in safety spots before an explorer discovers the nest. If all eggs are removed from the nest before the explorer reaches it, everyone wins. If the explorer arrives first, everyone loses.
Components
- 1 wooden Dodo figure (Morris)
- 1 wooden Explorer figure
- 1 waterfall slope
- 10 hiding spot tiles (double-sided: eggs side / empty side)
- 28 egg tokens (7 blue, 7 purple, 7 red, 7 yellow – double-sided: whole / broken)
- 1 game board (fits inside box)
Setup
- Place the box in the center of the table. Set the board inside, island side up.
- Place the waterfall slope between the box side and the board.
- Sort eggs into 4 piles of 7 by color. Place them whole-side up on the nest in the center of the board.
- Place 10 hiding spot tiles, eggs side up, in a half circle around the bottom of the waterfall slope.
- Place the explorer on the flowers of the board, in front of the purple stone.
- Place Morris in front of the waterfall.
- The last player to have touched an egg goes first; play clockwise.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Place Morris on the stone atop the waterfall.
- Choose 1 egg from the nest (whole side up) and place it on Morris (head or wing).
- Push Morris down the slope and let him slide.
- Check the egg after Morris stops.
Actions
Egg Results
| Result |
Effect |
| Egg intact (whole) |
Place it on a free slot of matching color on any hiding spot tile. Multicolored slots accept any color |
| Egg broken |
Set it aside (out of the game). Move the explorer forward to the next stone of the same color as the broken egg |
Hiding Spots
When a hiding spot tile is completely filled with eggs, move the explorer BACK by the number of spaces shown on that tile (1, 2, or 3 spaces back).
Explorer Movement
- The last stone on the path is multicolored: a broken egg of any color moves the explorer to this stone.
- Explorer moves forward on broken eggs, backward when hiding spots are completed.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Win: All eggs are removed from the nest while the explorer has not yet reached the multicolored stone.
Lose: The explorer reaches the multicolored stone while eggs remain in the nest.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Crazy Morris variant: Place 2 eggs on Morris per turn. Both whole = hide both. Both broken = move explorer twice (choose order of colors). One whole + one broken = hide the whole egg and move explorer for the broken one.
- The game is fully cooperative; all players win or lose together.
