Monopoly
Overview
Monopoly is the classic property trading game where players buy, rent, and sell real estate to become the wealthiest player and bankrupt all opponents. Players move around the board based on dice rolls, purchasing properties, building houses and hotels, and collecting rent from opponents who land on their properties.
Components
- 1 game board
- 3 dice (2 standard + 1 Speed Die)
- Tokens (player pieces)
- 32 houses
- 12 hotels
- 16 Chance cards
- 16 Community Chest cards
- 28 Title Deed cards
- Play money
- 1 Banker’s tray
Setup
- Place the board on a flat surface. Place Chance and Community Chest cards face down on their spaces.
- Sort money by denomination in the Banker’s tray.
- Each player receives $1,500: 2x $500, 2x $100, 2x $50, 6x $20, 5x $10, 5x $5, 5x $1.
- Each player chooses a token and places it on “GO.”
- Select a Banker (who may also play). The Bank holds Title Deeds, houses, and hotels.
- Roll dice; highest total goes first. Play proceeds left.
Turn Structure
- Roll both dice and move your token clockwise that many spaces.
- Resolve the space you land on (buy property, pay rent, draw card, etc.).
- If you rolled doubles, take another turn. Three consecutive doubles sends you to Jail.
Actions
Buying Property
- Unowned property: You may buy it at the listed price. Receive the Title Deed. If you decline, the Banker auctions it to the highest bidder (any player may bid, including the player who declined).
- Railroads: Rent depends on how many you own (1 = $25, 2 = $50, 3 = $100, 4 = $200).
- Utilities: Rent = 4x dice roll if you own 1 utility; 10x dice roll if you own both.
Paying Rent
Land on another player’s property: pay rent as shown on the Title Deed. Rent increases with houses/hotels and with owning complete color groups.
Building Houses & Hotels
- You must own all properties of a color group to build.
- Build evenly: no property can have more than 1 house above any other in the group.
- Houses cost varies by color group (see Title Deeds).
- After 4 houses, you may buy a hotel (return 4 houses + hotel price).
- Maximum: 1 hotel per property. The 32-house/12-hotel supply is a hard limit.
Draw the top card, follow instructions, return to bottom of deck.
Mortgaging
- Mortgage unimproved property to the Bank for the mortgage value on the Title Deed.
- No rent may be collected on mortgaged property.
- Unmortgage by paying mortgage value + 10% interest.
- All buildings on a color group must be sold back (at half price) before any property in that group can be mortgaged.
Trading
Players may trade properties, cash, and Get Out of Jail Free cards at any time. Buildings cannot be traded.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The last player remaining after all others are bankrupt wins. A bankrupt player must turn over all assets to the creditor (another player or the Bank).
Bankruptcy
- If you owe more than you can pay, you must sell buildings (at half price) and mortgage properties.
- If you still cannot pay, you are bankrupt and out of the game.
- If bankrupt to another player, that player receives all your assets (properties remain mortgaged; new owner must immediately pay 10% interest or unmortgage).
- If bankrupt to the Bank, the Bank auctions all your properties.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- GO: Collect $200 salary each time you land on or pass GO.
- Jail: Three ways to land in Jail: (1) land on “Go to Jail,” (2) draw a Go to Jail card, (3) roll doubles three times in a row. To exit: pay $50 before rolling, use a Get Out of Jail Free card, or roll doubles (max 3 attempts; after 3 failed attempts, pay $50 and move the last roll).
- Free Parking: Nothing happens (official rules). House rules often add a pot, but this is unofficial.
- Income Tax: Pay $200 (or 10% of total assets in some editions).
- The Bank never goes broke: If the Bank runs out of money, the Banker writes IOUs on paper.
- Housing shortage: If not enough houses are available, they are auctioned to the highest bidder.
Speed Die Rules (Optional)
After passing GO for the first time, roll the Speed Die along with the 2 standard dice:
- 1, 2, or 3: Add to the total of the white dice.
- Bus: Move the value of one die, the other, or their sum (your choice).
- Mr. Monopoly: Move the sum of white dice and resolve. Then advance to the next unowned property (buy/auction) or to the next rent-owed property if none remain.
- Doubles are determined by white dice only.
- Three-of-a-kind (all same number): move anywhere on the board.
