Monopoly: Here and Now
Overview
Monopoly: Here and Now is an updated edition of Monopoly featuring 22 landmarks from America’s most popular travel destinations, chosen by public vote in 2006. Property values are scaled to modern prices (millions of dollars), tokens represent contemporary icons, and railroads are replaced by airports. The core gameplay follows classic Monopoly rules.
Components
- 1 gameboard (with updated landmark properties)
- Tokens (modern icons: cell phone, coffee cup, french fries, New Balance shoe, Labradoodle, jet airplane, laptop)
- 32 houses, 12 hotels
- 16 Chance cards, 16 Community Chest cards
- Title Deed cards
- Play money (higher denominations)
- 2 dice
Setup
- Place the board on a flat surface. Place Chance and Community Chest cards face down on their spaces.
- Sort money by denomination.
- Each player receives $15,000,000: two each of $5,000,000s, $1,000,000s, and $500,000s; six $200,000s; five each of $50,000s and $10,000s.
- Each player chooses a token and places it on GO.
- Select a Banker. Roll dice; highest goes first.
Turn Structure
Same as classic Monopoly:
- Roll 2 dice, move clockwise.
- Resolve the space (buy property, pay rent, draw cards).
- Doubles = roll again (3 consecutive doubles = Jail).
Actions
Follows standard Monopoly rules with updated names:
- Properties: 22 American landmarks grouped by color.
- Railroads replaced by airports: Rent scales with number owned ($250K/500K/$1M/$2M).
- Utilities replaced by service providers: Internet Service Provider and Cell Phone Service Provider.
- Income Tax replaced by Interest Due on Credit Card.
- Houses and hotels function identically to classic Monopoly.
- Trading, mortgaging, and building rules are the same.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Last player remaining after all others are bankrupt wins, identical to classic Monopoly.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- All classic Monopoly rules apply (see Monopoly entry for full details).
- Property values and rents are updated to modern dollar amounts.
- Passing GO collects $2,000,000.
- The Banker manages the significantly larger denominations.
