Modern Naval Battles
Overview
Modern Naval Battles is a card game for 2-6 players simulating modern naval warfare. Players build fleets of warships and attack opponents’ vessels while defending their own. Each round, players maneuver ships, launch attacks using weapon cards, and apply defense cards to protect their fleet. The first player to sink 25 victory points worth of enemy ships wins.
Components
- Fleet cards (various ship types: carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, frigates)
- Weapon/Attack cards
- Defense cards
- Victory point tracker
- Rules booklet
Setup
- Shuffle all cards together (or separate into fleet and action decks per variant).
- Deal starting hands to each player.
- Each player builds their initial fleet by playing ship cards in front of them.
- Determine starting player.
Turn Structure
Players take turns clockwise. On your turn:
- Draw cards to refill your hand.
- Deploy ships from your hand to your fleet (optional).
- Attack an opponent’s ship using weapon cards.
- Defend against attacks using defense cards.
Actions
Deploying Ships
- Play ship cards from your hand face up in front of you.
- Ships have hit points, weapon systems, and victory point values.
Attacking
- Choose a target enemy ship.
- Play attack/weapon cards matching your ships’ weapon systems.
- Calculate total attack value.
Defending
- The defending player may play defense cards (countermeasures, evasion, etc.).
- Subtract defense value from attack value.
- Remaining damage reduces the target ship’s hit points.
Sinking Ships
- When a ship’s hit points reach zero, it is sunk.
- The attacking player scores victory points equal to the ship’s VP value.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to accumulate 25 victory points from sinking enemy ships wins.
Victory point values vary by ship type (carriers and battleships worth more, frigates worth less).
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Some ships have special abilities (anti-air, anti-submarine, etc.).
- Submarine attacks may bypass certain defenses.
- Players can reinforce their fleet by deploying new ships from their hand.
- The game can be played as a free-for-all or in teams.
- The 2008 version (Global Warfare) has updated rules and more card variety.
