Merchants of Amsterdam
Overview
Merchants of Amsterdam is an auction game designed by Reiner Knizia set in 17th-century Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. Players compete to establish trading posts, build warehouses, and dominate commodity markets. The game features a unique Dutch auction clock mechanism where a mechanical timer ticks down and players race to slam a button to claim the lot at a decreasing price. Players score by achieving first or second place majorities across multiple scoring categories.
Components
- 1 game board (Amsterdam map with markets, colonies, and warehouses)
- 1 Dutch auction clock (mechanical timer with descending price pointer)
- Commodity cards
- Trading post pieces
- Warehouse tokens
- Score track and markers
- Player screens
Setup
- Place the board centrally with the Dutch auction clock accessible to all.
- Each player takes pieces in their color and starting money.
- Shuffle commodity cards and prepare draw piles.
- Place starting tokens on the board as indicated.
Turn Structure
Each round:
- Reveal auction lot: Draw cards or tokens to form the lot being auctioned.
- Dutch Auction: Start the clock. The price pointer descends from a high value. Any player can slam the button to claim the lot at the current price.
- Place/Score: The winning bidder places tokens on the board according to what was auctioned.
- Scoring rounds occur periodically.
Actions
Dutch Auction Mechanism
- The clock starts at a high price and ticks down.
- Any player can stop the clock by pressing the button.
- The player who stops the clock pays the shown price and claims the lot.
- If the clock reaches zero, the lot is free to the first player to press.
- Strategic timing: wait for a lower price but risk another player claiming it first.
Placing Tokens
- Place trading posts in colonies for majority competition.
- Build warehouses for commodity storage bonuses.
- Invest in commodity markets for scoring position.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Scoring occurs at multiple intervals throughout the game. Players earn points for:
- First place in each commodity market category.
- Second place in each category (fewer points).
- Trading post majorities in colonies.
- Warehouse bonuses.
The player with the most total points at the end of the game wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- The Dutch auction clock is the distinctive feature; timing your bid is critical.
- If multiple players try to press simultaneously, the first press counts.
- Some editions use a digital timer instead of the mechanical clock.
- Money management is important as overspending early limits late-game options.
