Overview
Mamma Mia! is a memory and hand management card game where players are pizza chefs trying to fill pizza orders. Players add ingredient cards to a shared pile and place pizza orders at strategic moments, hoping the right ingredients will be available when orders are resolved. After 3 rounds, the player who has filled the most orders wins.
Components
- 72 ingredient cards (in 5 types: pepperoni, mushroom, pineapple, green pepper, olive)
- 40 pizza order cards (8 per player, each requiring specific ingredient combinations)
- Rulebook
Setup
- Each player takes 8 pizza order cards of their color.
- Shuffle all ingredient cards to form a draw deck.
- Each player draws 6 ingredient cards.
- Each player selects 1 of their pizza order cards to add to their hand (holding 7 cards total).
- Determine starting player.
Turn Structure
On your turn, you must:
- Play ingredient cards: Play 1 or more ingredient cards of a single type from your hand onto the common stack (face-up, but stacked so only the top is visible).
- Optionally play a pizza order: After playing ingredients, you may play 1 pizza order card on top of the common stack.
- Draw: Draw cards from the deck until you have 7 cards. You may also take 1 pizza order card from your remaining orders.
Actions
Playing Ingredients
You must play at least 1 ingredient card per turn. All ingredient cards played in one turn must be the same type (e.g., 3 mushroom cards). Place them on the common stack.
Placing Pizza Orders
After playing ingredients, optionally place 1 pizza order on the stack. The order shows what ingredients are needed. When resolved later, the ingredients in the stack (in order) determine if the order can be filled.
Drawing
Draw ingredient cards from the deck up to a hand of 7. Also optionally add 1 unplayed pizza order to your hand.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Round End and Resolution
When the ingredient deck runs out, the round ends. Resolve the common stack:
- Turn the entire stack over (bottom becomes top).
- Go through card by card, sorting ingredients into piles by type.
- When a pizza order is reached, check if the accumulated ingredients meet the order’s requirements.
- If enough ingredients are available, the order is filled (set aside for that player). Remove the used ingredients.
- If not enough, the player may supplement from their hand. If still not enough, the order goes back to the player’s hand unfilled.
Scoring
After 3 complete rounds, the player who has filled the most pizza orders wins. Ties are broken by fewest unfilled orders remaining.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Memory element: Players must remember what ingredients have been added to the stack to time their orders well.
- Ingredients accumulate in the stack across all players’ turns.
- A well-timed order placed right after a large dump of matching ingredients is more likely to be filled.
- After round resolution, all unused ingredients are reshuffled to form a new draw deck.
- Players receive their unfilled orders back for the next round.
- Pizza orders have varying difficulty – some require only 2-3 ingredients, others require 5+.
