Overview
Libertalia is a pirate-themed game where players compete across three campaigns to amass the most doubloons. Each campaign consists of 6 days of looting followed by a day of rest for scoring. Players simultaneously choose character cards from identical hands, then resolve actions and divide booty based on rank order. The richest player after all three campaigns wins.
Components
- 1 Game board (ship with day spaces and character placement area)
- 6 Pirate dens (one per player)
- 6 Score tokens
- 6 Crew marker cards
- 180 Character cards (30 per player, ranks 1-30)
- 1 Score track
- 50 Booty tokens: 4 Chests, 6 Jewels, 10 Goods, 6 Spanish Officers, 6 Sabers, 8 Treasure Maps, 10 Cursed Relics
- 13 Doubloons of value 10
- 15 Doubloons of value 5
- 45 Doubloons of value 1
Setup
- Place the board in the middle of the table.
- Each player randomly draws a crew marker card and takes the matching den, score token, and 30 character cards.
- Place the score track to the side; each player places their score token on “0.”
- Each player receives 10 doubloons (1x5 and 5x1). Remaining doubloons form the bank.
- Place all booty tokens in a bag and shuffle.
- Draw 1 booty token per player per day of the campaign (6 days) and place them on the ship spaces (e.g., 24 tokens for 4 players — 4 per day space).
- The youngest player shuffles their character cards and draws 9, reading rank and name aloud. All players select the same 9 cards. Unused cards are set aside under crew marker cards.
Turn Structure
The game plays over 3 campaigns, each with 6 days of looting + 1 day of rest.
Each Day of Looting (4 phases):
Phase 1: Sunrise
- Each player secretly chooses one character card from hand and places it face-down.
- All cards are revealed simultaneously.
- Characters are placed on the ship in increasing order of rank (lowest rank on the left).
- Ties broken by influence value (silver mark number) — higher influence = higher rank.
Phase 2: Day
- Resolve “Day” special actions in increasing order of rank (left to right).
Phase 3: Dusk
- In decreasing order of rank (right to left), each player chooses one booty token from the current day’s space.
- “Dusk” special actions resolve in the same order.
- Saber: Must discard one character from an adjacent player’s den. If no adjacent players have characters in their dens, nothing happens. Saber goes to your den face-down.
- Spanish Officer: Your character is discarded instead of going to your den. The Officer goes face-down to your den.
- Other tokens go face-down to your den; your character goes face-up to your den.
- Leftover booty tokens remain on the board until campaign end.
Phase 4: Night
- All players simultaneously resolve “Night” special actions for characters in their dens.
Day of Rest (Scoring Phase)
- Resolve “End of Campaign” special actions for characters still in dens.
- Calculate each player’s fortune:
| Booty |
Value |
| Chest |
5 doubloons |
| Jewel |
3 doubloons |
| Goods |
1 doubloon |
| Set of 3 Treasure Maps |
12 doubloons |
| 1-2 Treasure Maps |
0 doubloons |
| Cursed Relic |
-3 doubloons |
| Saber |
0 doubloons |
| Spanish Officer |
0 doubloons |
- Add doubloons in den to booty values.
- Move score token by total fortune.
- Final score = sum of all three campaigns.

Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Discarded characters go face-down to the graveyard in their owner’s den.
- Booty tokens may remain face-down until an action requires them to be revealed.
- Doubloon losses round down. If a player cannot cover the full loss, they lose all remaining doubloons.
- Night action order: If order matters, resolve in decreasing order of character rank.
- Discarded booty tokens return immediately to the bag.
Campaign Preparation (between campaigns)
- Remove all characters from graveyards and dens from the game.
- Return all booty tokens to the bag.
- Return all doubloons to the bank.
- Players keep their 3 unplayed character cards in hand.
- Each player receives 10 doubloons (1x5 and 5x1).

- All players select the same 6 cards, adding them to their 3 kept cards (9 cards total in hand).
- Draw new booty tokens for the next campaign.
