Overview
KuZOOkA is a cooperative board game where 2-6 players are zoo animals plotting a daring escape. Players have 7 rounds to work together, communicating through limited signals to pool their colored item cards and overcome obstacles along the escape path. The game combines hand management with deduction and cooperative decision-making.
Components
- 1 double-sided game board (standard side and “high security” side with harder difficulty)
- 10 Animal cards (each with a unique power)
- Item cards (colored cards showing items like red ice cream spoons, purple scarves, etc.)
- Animal tokens
- Experience star tokens
- Universal tool cards (jokers)
- Round tracker
Setup
- Place the game board (choose standard or high security side).
- Each player takes one animal card with a unique power.
- Shuffle the item card deck.
- Set the round tracker to Round 1.
- Place animal tokens at the start of the escape path.
Turn Structure
The game is played over 7 rounds. Each round:
1. Deal Item Cards
Deal item cards to all players (20-22 cards in the first round; the number may change based on experience and round).
2. Signal Phase
Players take turns placing one of their animal tokens on the escape path, further along than any previously placed token. The placement gives an indication of the player’s cards (specifically which colors they hold), but players cannot openly discuss their exact hands.
3. Escape Attempt
At some point during the Signal Phase, a player decides to attempt an escape by stopping the signaling.
- All players simultaneously reveal all cards matching the color of the space where the furthest animal token sits.
- Compare the total number of matching cards to the number printed on that space.
4. Resolve Result
- More cards than the number: Success! Gain experience stars equal to that number.
- Exactly the number: Great success! Gain experience stars plus a universal tool card (counts as any color in future rounds).
- Fewer cards than the number: Failure! The escape attempt is thwarted.
5. Advance Round
Move the round tracker forward. Discard played cards and deal new hands for the next round.
Actions
Animal Powers
Each of the 10 animals has a unique special power that can be used to help the group:
- Some powers let players share extra information about their hands.
- Some powers modify card counts or provide wild/joker effects.
- Some powers affect the signaling or escape phases.
Experience Stars
- Earned from successful escape attempts.
- Can be spent to purchase higher starting experience levels, granting more cards in future rounds.
- Earned from exact-match successes.
- Count as any color during future escape attempts (wild cards).
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- Win: During any round, if the group reaches one of the six final spaces on the escape path and has at least as many cards of the designated color as the number shown, the animals escape and all players win.
- Lose: If the animals fail to escape by the end of Round 7, all players lose — the animals are transferred to the smaller zoo.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Limited communication: Players cannot openly discuss their exact hand contents. The only sanctioned communication is through placement of animal tokens on the path.
- High security side: The reverse side of the board provides a harder game with more challenging spaces.
- Difficulty scaling: The game naturally scales difficulty by player count through card distribution.
- Experience progression: Experience earned in earlier rounds can improve the group’s chances in later rounds.
- Animal card variety: With 10 animal cards for up to 6 players, each game has a different combination of available powers.
Player Reference
Round: Deal cards → Signal (place tokens on path) → Attempt escape → Reveal matching cards → Check result
Success: Cards >= space number = earn experience. Cards = exact number = experience + tool card. Cards < number = fail.
Win: Reach a final space with enough matching cards by Round 7.
Key: Communicate through token placement only — no open discussion of hand contents.
