Overview
Kraken Attack! is a cooperative game where players work as a pirate crew to defend their ship from the Kraken Tootone and its tentacles. Roll dice to advance tentacles toward the ship, then play action cards to push them back. Place 3 Kraken attack tokens on the Kraken to win. If the Kraken smashes 4 holes in the ship, everyone loses.
Components
- 1 Ship board
- 1 Kraken tracking board
- 1 Kraken figurine
- 8 Tentacle figurines (4 purple, 4 red)
- 40 Action cards (10 per pirate)
- 4 Player Aid cards
- 6 Kraken dice (3 purple, 3 red)
- 4 Pirate pawns
- 8 Ship’s Rails
- 4 Hole tokens
- 3 Kraken Attack tokens
- 4 Whirlpool tokens (experienced variant)
Setup
- Place Ship board in the center.
- Place 8 Ship’s Rails around the Ship edges.
- Place 8 Tentacles in the ocean in designated positions (separate by color).
- Place 4 Hole tokens face-down in the middle of the Ship.
- Place Kraken tracking board beside the Ship; place 4 Kraken dice on indicated spaces; place Kraken figurine on starting spot. Keep 2 remaining dice available.
- Place 3 Kraken Attack tokens at the end of the Kraken tracking board.
- Each player chooses a Pirate, places pawn on a Boat area.
- Each player takes their 10 Action cards and a Player Aid card (side “1/2” face up).
- Shuffle your 10 cards: place 2 face-up, 8 face-down as draw pile.
Turn Structure
Each turn has 2 phases:
Phase 1: Move the Tentacles
Roll all available dice (2 at start; more are added as the Kraken advances on its track).
- Red dice move red Tentacles; purple dice move purple Tentacles.
- Each die symbol matches a Bubble space on the Ship board, indicating which Tentacle to move one space toward the Ship.
- Same Tentacle can move multiple spaces if its symbol appears on multiple dice of its color.
- Blank face: No movement.
- Eye of the Kraken: Move ALL Tentacles of that die’s color one space toward the Ship.
If a Tentacle in the Saber zone (closest to ship) is activated:
- Rail present: Tentacle destroys the rail; Tentacle returns to its Bubble space.
- No rail: A Hole token is placed face-up on the Boat area; Tentacle returns to its Bubble space.
Phase 2: Play an Action Card
Choose one of your 2 face-up Action cards. Perform any or all actions on it in any order. Then place it at the bottom of your draw pile and draw a new card (always have 2 face-up).

Your Pirate must be on the correct side of the ship and covering the same row as the Tentacle to push it back.
Pirate Special Abilities
- Astrid: Perform one action on her card twice (except Funny Face).
- Billy: When pushing a Tentacle/Kraken with Cannon, also pushes all other Tentacles in the Cannon zone on the same side.
- Samuel: Can ignore Eye of the Kraken symbols when rolling dice.
- Elena: Pistol action can target any Tentacle/Kraken in any Pistol zone regardless of her position.
Funny Face (Special)
If your Action card has a Funny Face, after completing actions, advance the Kraken one spot on its track. When it reaches a die spot, add that die to the available dice permanently. When the Kraken reaches the final spot, the next Funny Face places it on the Ship board (replaces a Tentacle of your choice).
The Kraken on the Ship Board
The Kraken takes on the replaced Tentacle’s color and Bubble symbol. It moves like a Tentacle. If pushed back, place a Kraken Attack token on it. Flip Player Aid to “2/2” side.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- Win: Place the 3rd Kraken Attack token on the Kraken figurine (push it back 3 times). Immediate victory.
- Lose: The 4th Hole token is placed on the Ship. Immediate defeat.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Multiple Hole tokens can be on the same Boat area.
- Any number of Pirates can be in the same Boat area.
- A Boat area covers 2 rows of Bubbles simultaneously.
- Holes cannot be repaired; only Ship’s Rails can be rebuilt.
- Move Tentacles grouped by color; resolve Eye of the Kraken symbols first.
- Solo variant: Choose 2 Pirates, shuffle their cards together into one draw pile with 2 face-up. Use the special ability of the Pirate whose card picture is on top of the draw pile.
- Young players variant: Play without special powers and/or without Kraken Attack tokens (pushing Kraken back once wins).
- Experienced variant: Place 1-4 Whirlpool tokens on ocean spaces. Tentacles/Kraken jump over Whirlpools, advancing an extra space.
