Overview
Key Largo is a simultaneous-action-selection game set in the Florida Keys in 1899. Players run treasure-hunting companies, hiring divers and buying equipment to search shipwrecks for gold and artifacts before Hurricane Katty arrives. Each day (round), all players secretly choose what to do – dive for treasure, sell at market, buy equipment, recruit divers, or take tourists dolphin-watching – then reveal simultaneously. The richest player when the hurricane hits wins.
Components
- Full-color game board depicting the island and surrounding waters
- 5 wooden boats
- 1 diving helmet token
- 130 cards (treasure, equipment, event)
- 15 diver tokens
- 40 equipment pieces (hoses, tridents, weights)
- Paper money
- Location cards for secret action selection
Setup
- Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Each player takes a boat, starting money, and starting divers.
- Shuffle the treasure deck and place it near the wreck locations.
- Set up the equipment shop, market, and tavern areas.
- Determine the hurricane track (10-day countdown).
Turn Structure
The game lasts 10 days. Each day has two action phases (morning and afternoon):
- Secret Selection: All players simultaneously choose a location/action for the phase by selecting a card face-down.
- Reveal: All players reveal their chosen locations simultaneously.
- Resolve: Actions are resolved at each location. When multiple players choose the same location, interactions and competition occur.
Each day consists of two such phases, giving players 20 total action selections over the game.
Actions
Dive at a Wreck
- Send your divers down to search a shipwreck for treasure.
- Better equipment (hoses, weights) allows access to deeper, more valuable wrecks.
- Draw treasure cards based on diving success.
- If multiple players dive the same wreck, competition for treasure increases.
Sell at the Market
- Sell recovered treasures for cash.
- Market prices may vary based on supply and demand.
- Timing your sales is crucial – selling when fewer competitors are at market may yield better prices.
Buy Equipment at the Shop
- Purchase diving gear: hoses (reach deeper wrecks), tridents (protect against hazards), weights (improve diving).
- Equipment enhances future diving effectiveness.
Visit the Tavern
- Recruit additional divers to expand your diving capacity.
- Listen to rumors that may reveal valuable wreck locations or upcoming events.
Dolphin Watching
- Take tourists dolphin watching for guaranteed income.
- A safe, predictable revenue source compared to the risks of diving.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
When Hurricane Katty arrives (after day 10), the game ends. The player with the most total wealth (cash on hand) wins. Wealth comes from:
- Cash earned from selling treasures
- Cash from dolphin-watching tours
- Minus any equipment purchase costs
Unsold treasures may have reduced or no value at game end.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- The simultaneous action selection creates a double-guessing dynamic – choosing a less popular location may yield better results.
- Equipment is persistent – once purchased, it benefits all future dives.
- Some wrecks are more dangerous but contain more valuable treasures.
- Divers can be lost to hazards if unprotected.
- The 10-day time pressure means players must balance investment (equipment, divers) against exploitation (diving, selling).
