Overview
Kampen om Rai (translated: “The Battle for Rai”) is a strategic board game with hidden army mechanics similar to Titan. Players control secret armies moving across a map, each concealing a hidden treasure within one of their forces. The goal is to transport both treasures to Rai, the capital city in the center of the board, and hold them there for three consecutive turns. Players must manage army movement, engage in combat, and protect their hidden treasures while trying to discover and intercept opponents’ treasures.
Components
- Game board (map with territories and Rai at the center)
- Army counters/tokens (per player, with hidden composition)
- Treasure markers (2 per player, hidden within armies)
- Combat resolution system
- Terrain reference
Setup
- Place the game board with Rai (the capital) in the center.
- Each player receives their army tokens and 2 treasure markers.
- Players secretly distribute their treasures among their starting armies.
- Place armies at starting positions around the board edges.
- The hidden nature of army composition and treasure placement is central to setup.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Move your armies across the map.
- Resolve any combats with opposing armies.
- Check if any treasures have reached or remain in Rai.
Actions
Movement
- Move armies between territories on the map.
- Different unit types within armies may have different movement capabilities.
- Each army moves as a group; the terrain affects movement speed.
- The two players try to get their armies into the most favorable terrain, which differs for each unit type.
- Army composition is secret – opponents do not know which armies contain treasures or what units are in each stack.
- Deception about which army carries your treasure is a key strategic element.
Combat
- When opposing armies meet, combat is resolved.
- Army strength depends on hidden unit composition, creating uncertainty for attackers.
- Defeating an opponent’s army may reveal their treasure location.
Treasure Management
- Each player has two treasures hidden in their armies.
- Both treasures must be transported to Rai to begin the hold countdown.
- Treasures can potentially be captured if the carrying army is defeated.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to have both of their treasures in Rai (the capital) and hold them there for 3 consecutive turns wins the game. This requires successfully transporting treasures across the map while defending against opponents and potentially disrupting their treasure movements.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- The hidden army mechanic means players must make decisions with incomplete information about opponents’ forces.
- Terrain favorability varies by unit type, adding another strategic layer to movement decisions.
- Holding treasures in Rai for 3 turns creates a defensive challenge – opponents know where your treasures are once they reach the capital.
- Multiple players competing for control of Rai creates dynamic alliances and conflicts.
- The game has similarities to Titan in its hidden stack/army mechanics.
