Overview
Just4Fun (also called Fourmation) is a strategy game for 2-4 players where players play numbered cards to place colored stones on a numbered grid, trying to control four fields in a row. The game combines hand management with area majority, as each field can hold multiple players’ stones and control is determined by who has the most.
Components
- 1 game board with a 6x6 grid of 36 numbered fields
- 80 colored stones (20 per player in 4 colors)
- Card deck: four copies each of cards numbered 1-12, plus one copy each of cards 13-19 (55 cards total)
Setup
- Each player takes 20 stones of their chosen color.
- Shuffle the card deck and deal 4 cards to each player.
- Place the remaining cards face down as the draw pile.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Play cards: Play 1 to 4 cards from your hand. Add their values together to determine which numbered field receives your stone.
- Place a stone: Place exactly one of your stones on the field matching the sum of your played cards.
- Draw cards: Draw cards from the draw pile equal to the number you played, restoring your hand to 4 cards.
Actions
Playing Cards
- You must play at least 1 card and may play up to 4.
- The sum of the played cards determines which numbered field (1-36) receives your stone.
- Multiple cards can combine to reach any field number.
Placement Restrictions
- You may NOT place a stone on a field where an opponent already has a majority of 2 or more stones over any other player.
- Once a player achieves a 2-stone majority on a field, that field is permanently locked for their control.
Unable to Move
- If you cannot legally place a stone on any field, you must exchange your entire hand for 4 new cards from the draw pile (your turn ends without placing a stone).
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Immediate Win: A player wins immediately if they have majority control (at least 1 more stone than any other player) on 4 fields in a row – horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Timed Win: If no player achieves four-in-a-row within 20 rounds, the game ends. Each player totals the field numbers of all fields they control (have majority on). The player with the highest total wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- A field is “controlled” by a player only if that player has more stones on it than any other single player.
- If two players are tied for the most stones on a field, neither controls it.
- A 2-stone majority permanently locks a field – no other player may add stones to it.
- Cards 13-19 are single-copy cards, making those fields harder to reach and potentially more valuable in the endgame tiebreaker.
- With fewer players, the game tends to be more strategic; with more players, blocking becomes more important.
