Overview
Jumbulaya is a strategic word game where players manipulate letter tiles on a 9-row grid to form words. Unlike traditional word games where letters can only be added to existing words, Jumbulaya lets you trade, add, and shuffle letters within each row to create new words. The game features a unique endgame mechanic: forming a “Jumbulaya” – a long vertical word reading down the board.
Components
- Game board with 9 rows (each row has multiple tile spaces)
- Letter tiles (enough to fill 3 center columns + draw bag)
- Tile racks (1 per player, color-coded)
- Colored ownership markers (1 set per player)
- Tile draw bag
Setup
- Fill the three middle columns of the board with random letter tiles face-up (27 tiles total).
- Each player draws 5 random letter tiles and places them on their tile rack.
- Each player takes their set of colored ownership markers.
- Select a random first player.
Turn Structure
On your turn, do one of the following:
- Form a word on one row of the board, then claim that row.
- Pass or discard tiles (mix discarded tiles back into the draw pile and draw replacements).
After forming a word, draw tiles to maintain 5 in your rack.
Actions
- Choose one row on the board.
- Rearrange the existing tiles in that row AND optionally add up to 2 tiles from your rack to form a valid word (Scrabble dictionary words).
- The new word must use at least as many tiles as any previous word on that row.
- The word must be different from any word previously played on that row.
- Place your colored ownership marker on that row.
Passing / Discarding
- If you cannot or choose not to form a word, you may pass.
- You may also discard any number of tiles from your rack, shuffle them back into the draw pile, and draw replacements.
Claiming a Jumbulaya
- Once all 9 rows are claimed and at least one row has 7+ tiles, any player may attempt a Jumbulaya.
- A Jumbulaya is a word of 7, 8, or 9 letters formed vertically by taking one tile from each row (in order from top to bottom). Rows may be skipped for 7- or 8-letter words.
- Successfully declaring a Jumbulaya ends the game immediately.
- Failing a Jumbulaya attempt costs you your next turn.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Points are scored for rows you own:
| Row Length |
Points |
| 3-6 tiles |
1 point per tile |
| 7 tiles |
10 points |
| 8 tiles |
12 points |
| 9 tiles |
15 points |
| 10 tiles |
20 points |
Jumbulaya bonus: 7 tiles = 10 pts, 8 tiles = 12 pts, 9 tiles = 15 pts.
The game ends when:
- A player plays a Jumbulaya.
- A player plays a 10-tile word.
- One player owns all 9 rows.
- No word is played for 2 consecutive full rounds.
The player with the most total points wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Double-letter tiles provide bonus points when included in a word.
- Words must be valid Scrabble dictionary words.
- You can “steal” ownership of a row by forming a new, longer valid word on it.
- When attempting a Jumbulaya, all letters must be read top-to-bottom in sequential row order.
- A failed Jumbulaya attempt is penalized by losing your next turn, not by losing points.
