Istanbul

Overview

Players lead a merchant and four assistants through a 4x4 grid of bazaar locations. To perform an action at a location, your merchant must leave behind or pick up an assistant. The goal is to be the first to collect 5 rubies (6 in a 2-player game). Rubies are obtained from various locations by paying goods, coins, or completing other requirements.

Components

Setup

  1. Lay out 16 Place tiles in a 4x4 grid (use “Short paths” layout for first game).
  2. Randomly determine start player (gets 2 Lira); each subsequent player clockwise gets 1 more Lira.
  3. Each player draws 1 Bonus card.
  4. Stack your 4 Assistants with Merchant on top; place on Fountain (Place 7).
  5. Place Family members on Police Station (Place 12).
  6. Place rubies and extensions on appropriate places.
  7. Roll dice to place Governor and Smuggler on random tiles.
  8. Set up Mosque tiles, Market demand tiles, Mail indicators, etc.

2-player special: Place neutral Merchant discs on Mosques 14/15 and Gemstone Dealer 16. Need 6 rubies to win.

Turn Structure

On your turn, execute these phases in order:

1. Movement

Move your Merchant stack 1 or 2 Places (orthogonally, not diagonally). Must end on a different Place.

2. Encounters with Other Merchants

Pay 2 Lira to each other Merchant at the target Place. If you cannot or will not pay, your turn ends. Exception: no payment required at the Fountain.

3. Action

Carry out the action of the target Place.

4. Encounters with Family Members, Governor, Smuggler
