Overview
Imagine is a visual charades game where players use transparent cards to create clues and get others to guess enigmas (words or phrases). The most creative use of overlapping, combining, and animating transparent icon cards earns points. The player with the most points wins.
Components
- 61 Transparent cards (with various icons and shapes)
- 65 Enigma cards (each with 8 enigmas)
- 35 Tokens (scoring)
Setup
- Arrange all transparent cards in a large circle on the playing surface. The space inside the circle is the playing area.
- Put the tokens within easy reach.
- Shuffle the Enigma cards and place them in a pile.
Turn Structure
The most creative player goes first (or youngest if undecided). On your turn:
- Draw an Enigma card. Another random player calls out a number between 1 and 8, selecting which enigma you must convey.
- If you don’t know the enigma, you may pick the next one above or below (for line 1 choose between 8 or 2; for line 8, between 7 and 1).
- Younger players may choose any enigma on the card.
- Say the enigma’s clue aloud (shown in bold above the word on the card).
- Create your visual clue using transparent cards from the circle:
- Take as many cards as you like.
- As soon as you place the first card, other players may begin guessing.
After a correct guess (or the round ending with no correct guess), return all transparent cards to the circle. The next player clockwise takes a turn.
Actions
What You MAY Do with Cards
- Use as many cards as you wish
- Put cards together, layer them on top of each other, combine them
- Move cards (animate them)
- Hide parts of cards with your fingers
- Make 3D models by lifting cards from the table
What You MAY NOT Do
- Speak, make noises, or sing
- Mime with your hands
- Make letters or digits with the cards
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- The first player to correctly guess the enigma earns 1 point (takes a token).
- The player who placed the transparent cards also earns 1 point.
- If several players guess correctly at exactly the same time, they each earn 1 point.
- No time limit by default. If nobody guesses after a player-agreed period, the round ends with no points awarded.
- The game ends when each player has gotten the other players to correctly guess 2 enigmas.
- The player with the highest number of points wins. Ties are broken by one more round.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Enigma cards contain a wide variety of subjects (movies, characters, objects, concepts).
- The clue word at the top of each enigma provides context (e.g., “Film,” “Character,” “Object”).
- Players score both for successful guessing AND for successful clue-giving, so both skills matter.
“Unlimited Imagination” Variant
Once familiar with the game, instead of using Enigma cards, create your own enigmas. Provide a relevant clue category (film, character, object, etc.) and use transparent cards to convey it. Personalize with common interests (works of art, book titles, video games) or personal themes.
