Overview
Heroica: Castle Fortaan is a LEGO dice-rolling adventure game where 2-4 players control heroes exploring Castle Fortaan, which has fallen to the Goblin King and his monster army. Players roll a custom LEGO die to move, fight monsters, collect items, and race to reach the mission target space or defeat the monster on it. The game features modular LEGO boards that can be rearranged for different missions.
Components
- Modular LEGO board sections (buildable/rearrangeable)
- 1 custom LEGO die (6 faces: 1, 2, 3, Sword, Skull, Heroica Shield)
- Hero microfigures (Barbarian, Wizard, Guardian Warrior, Druid, Knight)
- Hero Packs (tracking health, items, defeated monsters)
- Monster pieces (Goblins of various strengths, Goblin King)
- Item pieces: Potions (Luck, Life, Speed), Keys, Treasure Chests, Gold pieces
- Weapons: Axe, Wand, Staff, Bow, Dagger, Sword
- Store area
- Locked Door pieces
- Helmet of Protection
- Mission Map poster
Setup
- Build the board sections using the building instructions.
- Choose a Mission Map from the poster and assemble sections as shown.
- Place all monsters and items in the designated locations.
- Build the LEGO die with the correct tile faces.
- Starting with the youngest player, each player chooses a Hero and takes the matching Hero Pack with 4 Health on it.
- Place all Heroes on the Mission Start space.
Turn Structure
The youngest player goes first; play continues clockwise. On your turn:
- Roll the LEGO die.
- Move your Hero up to the number of spaces shown (1, 2, or 3), OR use a Shield result for movement (up to 4 spaces) or your Hero’s Ranged skill.
- Pick up any items in spaces you move into or through.
- If you move into a space adjacent to a monster, you MUST stop and fight.
- If you land on a Treasure Chest space, you MUST stop and search it (roll again).
Actions
Movement
- Move up to the rolled number of spaces. No diagonal movement allowed.
- If you end on a space occupied by another Hero, move forward to the first available space.
- Pick up items you pass through or land on.
Fighting Monsters
When adjacent to a monster, roll the LEGO die again:
- Sword: Defeat the monster.
- Heroica Shield: Defeat the monster OR use your Hero’s Melee skill.
- Skull: Lose Health equal to monster’s strength AND move back 1 space.
- Sword & Skull: Defeat the monster AND lose Health equal to monster’s strength AND move back 1 space.
- Number (1/2/3): Move up to that many spaces (effectively a miss in combat).
If adjacent to 2+ monsters, choose which to fight first. If you win, immediately fight the next.
Hero Special Skills
Each Hero has a unique Ranged and Melee skill usable on Shield rolls:
- Barbarian: Melee — defeat ALL adjacent monsters and move 1 space.
- Wizard: Ranged — defeat a monster up to 4 spaces away (even around corners).
- Knight: Melee — move up to 2 spaces and defeat an adjacent monster.
- Druid: Melee — restore full Health.
- Guardian Warrior: (see rules for specific skill)
Health
- If you lose all Health, you are temporarily defeated and must spend turns healing.
- On each healing turn, roll the die and restore Health up to the number rolled. Shield = restore full Health.
- Once Health is fully restored, resume normal play on your next turn.
- You may NOT heal unless you have lost ALL Health.
Potions
Use at any time during your turn. Each Potion is single-use (return to box after use):
- Luck: Re-roll the LEGO die.
- Life: Restore 2 Health.
- Speed: Move up to 4 extra spaces.
Treasure Chests
Roll the die to discover contents. Results may include gold or traps (lose Health/gain gold combinations).
Weapons and Store
- Buy weapons for 3 gold each; sell for 2 gold each.
- Each weapon gives an alternative skill usable on Shield rolls.
- You may carry multiple weapons but use only one skill per roll.
- Axe: Defeat ALL adjacent monsters. Wand: Defeat a monster up to 3 spaces away (around corners). Staff: Restore up to 2 Health. Bow: Defeat a monster up to 5 spaces away in a straight line. Dagger: Defeat the monster and take 1 gold. Sword: Move 1 space and defeat an adjacent monster.
Locked Doors and Keys
- You may not move through Locked Doors.
- Use a Key from your Hero Pack when adjacent to unlock it (single-use, carry only 1 key at a time).
- Once unlocked, any player may pass through.
- Rolling Shield while adjacent to a Locked Door lets you pass through without a Key (door stays locked).
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to move into the target space shown on the Mission Map OR defeat the monster on that space wins the game.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Epic Heroica: Play 2+ missions sequentially. Winner of most missions wins. Tiebreaker: most gold. Restore full Health between missions. Most defeated monsters at end of each mission = 1 gold bonus. Keep gold, Potions, and weapons between missions.
- Battle Heroica: One player controls all monsters. Monster Player wins by defeating 2 Heroes or the same Hero twice. Monster Player moves 1 monster per turn using the die. Cannot pick up items. Cannot fight a defeated Hero who is healing.
- Helmet of Protection: Armor that increases full Health by 1. Can be kept between missions or sold for 2 gold.
- Heroica sets can be combined for larger, more detailed missions.
