Overview
Here to Slay is a competitive card game where players assemble a party of Heroes to slay Monsters while sabotaging opponents. Players use action points to draw cards, play Heroes, equip Items, cast Magic spells, and attack Monsters. The first player to slay 3 Monsters or assemble a full Party of 6 different classes wins.
Components
- 1 main deck (115 standard-sized cards)
- 6 oversized Party Leader cards
- 15 oversized Monster cards
- 2 six-sided dice
- 6 rules reference cards
Setup
- Separate all card types.
- Each player chooses a Party Leader card (roll dice or free-for-all to determine pick order). Place your Party Leader in your Party (play area in front of you).
- Each player may take a rules reference card. Return unused Party Leaders and reference cards to the box.
- Shuffle all standard-sized cards together, deal 5 cards to each player.
- Place remaining cards face down as the main deck; leave space for a discard pile.
- Shuffle Monster cards, flip 3 face up in the center. Place remaining Monsters as the Monster deck.
- Whoever picked their Party Leader last goes first.
Turn Structure
Players take turns clockwise. Each player receives 3 action points per turn.
Actions
1 Action Point Actions
- Draw a card from the main deck
- Play a Hero, Item, or Magic card from your hand (if playing a Hero, you may immediately roll to use its effect)
- Roll two dice to use the effect of a Hero card already in your Party (cannot attempt the same Hero’s effect more than once per turn, even on a failed roll)
2 Action Point Actions
- Attack a face-up Monster card (must meet Party requirements on the Monster card)
3 Action Point Actions
- Discard your entire hand and draw 5 new cards
Free Actions (0 Action Points)
- Play a Modifier card on any dice roll (yours or another player’s)
- Play a Challenge card when another player attempts to play a Hero, Item, or Magic card
Card Types
- Hero Cards: Have a class and an effect with a roll requirement. Roll 2 dice equal to or higher than the requirement to use the effect.
- Item Cards: Equip to a Hero card (not Party Leaders). Only 1 Item per Hero. Cannot replace Items. If the Hero is destroyed/stolen/returned, the Item goes with it.
- Magic Cards: One-time effects, discarded after use.
- Modifier Cards: Modify any dice roll by the stated amount. Multiple Modifiers can stack on one roll. Some offer two options (e.g., +1 or -3).
- Challenge Cards: Contest another player’s Hero/Item/Magic card. Both players roll 2 dice; if challenger rolls equal or higher, the card is discarded. Each card can only be challenged once.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Two ways to win:
- Slay 3 Monster cards – Successfully attack and defeat 3 Monsters.
- Full Party – End your turn with your Party (including Party Leader) representing 6 different classes.
Monster Attacks
- Cost 2 action points.
- Must meet the Monster’s Party requirements (specific classes or number of Heroes).
- Roll 2 dice against the Monster’s roll requirement.
- If you meet or exceed the requirement: you slay the Monster and add it to your Party.
- If you roll within the Monster’s penalty range: suffer the penalty (e.g., sacrifice a Hero).
- If you roll between the penalty and success thresholds: nothing happens.
- Slain Monsters grant a permanent skill and cannot be stolen, destroyed, attacked, or returned to hand.
- After slaying, flip a new Monster from the Monster deck.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Party Leader cards cannot be sacrificed, destroyed, stolen, or returned to hand.
- Party Leader skills trigger each time their conditions are met (unlike Hero effects, which are once per turn).
- The Shadow Claw Party Leader may not be used in 2-player games.
- Your Party Leader counts as its class for the full Party win condition but is NOT considered a Hero card for Monster Party requirements.
- Unused action points do not roll over.
- If a card effect tells you to perform an action immediately, no additional action points are spent.
- A single Hero with the required class can fulfill one class requirement on a Monster card but not two separate requirements simultaneously.
