Overview
Hedgehog Roll is a dexterity game where players roll a fuzzy ball across forest goodies (velcro tokens) to collect mushrooms, leaves, and apples, using them to move their hedgehog along a forest path toward home. Playable cooperatively (outrun a fox) or competitively (race each other). The first hedgehog to reach the house wins.
Components
- 7 double-sided boards (1 starting board, 4 path boards, 1 house board, 1 fox board)
- 1 fuzzy ball (hedgehog)
- 1 hedgehog face token
- 18 velcro tokens: 6 leaves, 6 apples, 6 mushrooms
- 1 fox figure
- 4 hedgehog figures (4 colors)
Setup
Competitive Mode (2-4 players)
- Arrange boards: starting board, then any number of path boards, ending with house board. Paths must always match between boards.
- Do NOT use the fox or fox board.
- Each player chooses a hedgehog and places it on the hedgehog image on the starting board.
- Place 18 forest goodies in the middle of the table, velcro side up.
- Youngest player goes first; play proceeds clockwise.
Cooperative Mode
- Arrange boards: starting board with fox board above it, path boards, then house board.
- Place the fox on the fox image of the fox board.
- Choose 1 hedgehog for the team; place on starting board.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Roll the ball – Roll the fuzzy ball any way you like, aiming to stick forest goodies to it.
- Collect tokens – Collect all goodies stuck to the ball OR flipped over (picture side up). Place them in front of you.
- Place goodies in pile – Place all collected goodies picture side up in a central pile.
- Check the pile – If 4 or more goodies of the same kind are in the pile, flip ALL goodies from the pile back onto the table (velcro side up) and shuffle them.
- Move your hedgehog – For each collected goodie, move your hedgehog to an adjacent clearing showing that goodie type.
- Move the fox (cooperative only) – After moving the hedgehog, move the fox 2 steps forward along the shortest route.
Actions
Movement Rules
- You must follow the path; you cannot skip clearings without using the matching goodies.
- You may use some or all collected goodies, but each can only be used once.
- You cannot keep leftover goodies for future turns.
You Do NOT Move If:
- You collected 5 or more forest goodies.
- You collected no goodies at all.
- You do not have the right goodies for any adjacent clearing.
Entering the House
You can enter the hedgehog house using any goodie type.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Competitive Mode
When someone reaches the house, all players who have not yet rolled that round get one final turn. All players who reach the house win.
Cooperative Mode
Your team wins if the hedgehog reaches the house before the fox catches it. You lose if the fox stops on the same spot as the hedgehog.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- The hedgehog face token attaches to the fuzzy ball and stays on between turns.
- Boards can be arranged in any configuration; paths on adjacent boards must always match.
- Advanced rolling variants:
- Flick Roll: place ball on table and flick it
- Weak Hand: roll with non-dominant hand
- High Roll: release from at least 10 cm height
- Elbow on Table: elbow must touch table
- Closed Eyes: set hand position, close eyes, then roll
- No Thumb: cannot touch ball with thumb
- Speedy Fox variant: Place fox on any paw-print clearing on the fox board (closer = harder). Optionally move fox 3 steps instead of 2.
