Overview
Great Western Trail is a strategy game where players are 19th-century ranchers herding cattle from Texas to Kansas City. Along the trail, players improve their herd, hire workers (cowboys, craftsmen, engineers), construct buildings, and manage their deck of cattle cards. Upon reaching Kansas City, players sell cattle and ship them by train to various cities for victory points. The player with the most VP after the game ends wins.
Components
- 1 game board (trail from Texas to Kansas City)
- 4 player boards
- 54 cattle cards in 4 types (various breeds with different values)
- 56 worker tiles (cowboys, craftsmen, engineers)
- 47 building tiles
- 24 hazard tiles
- 22 teepee tiles
- 18 objective cards
- 10 station master tiles
- 4 certificate markers
- 7 train station tokens per player
- 1 job market board
- Coins, VP tokens, various wooden components
Setup
- Place game board centrally. Place hazard and teepee tiles on designated spaces along the trail.
- Set up the Kansas City area with city tiles and train routes.
- Each player takes a player board, starting cattle cards (deck of 14: several 1-value and 2-value cows), starting money, and train station tokens.
- Place worker tiles on the job market, sorted by type and cost.
- Shuffle and place building tiles and objective cards.
- Determine starting player.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Move your cattleman along the trail 1 to several spaces (based on movement value). You must stop on or pass through neutral or your own buildings. You skip opponent buildings (unless they have specific effects).
- Use the location where you stopped to perform its actions.
- Draw up to your hand limit if needed.
When you reach Kansas City, you must:
- Sell cattle (reveal your hand of cattle cards, count unique breeds for your delivery value).
- Ship cattle via train to a city (pay the cost, place a train station token, score VP).
- Move your cattleman back to the start of the trail.
Actions
Trail Building Actions (depend on building type)
- Hire workers: Pay money to hire cowboys, craftsmen, or engineers from the job market.
- Buy cattle: Pay money to add higher-value cattle cards to your deck.
- Build/upgrade buildings: Place or upgrade your buildings along the trail.
- Remove hazards/teepees: Clear obstacles from the trail for VP/benefits.
- Gain certificates: Improve your certificate level to ship cattle to more distant (more valuable) cities.
- Move train: Advance your train engine along the railroad track.
- Various auxiliary actions: Depending on your buildings and upgrades.
Worker Types
| Worker | Benefit |
|——–|———|
| Cowboy | Improves ability to buy cattle; some provide immediate benefits |
| Craftsman | Allows building construction and upgrades |
| Engineer | Advances your train engine along the railroad |
Delivering Cattle in Kansas City
- Reveal all cattle cards in your hand.
- Count the number of different breeds (each breed only counts once regardless of how many copies).
- Your delivery value = sum of different breed values.
- Choose a city to ship to: each city has a minimum delivery value and a cost. Place your train station token there.
- Score VP equal to the city’s value minus any penalties.
- Discard all cattle cards; shuffle your discard pile into your draw pile.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Game end trigger: When a player places their last train station token or when the job market cannot be fully refilled.
VP Sources:
- Delivering cattle to cities (VP from city tiles)
- Objectives completed
- Buildings placed along the trail
- Workers hired (some provide end-game VP)
- Hazards and teepees removed
- Money (converted at the end)
- Station master bonuses
- Train position on the railroad
Penalties:
- Undelivered cattle (negative VP for low delivery values)
- Workers not hired (possible negative VP from the job market)
The player with the most VP wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Cattle deck management: Your deck starts with many low-value cows. Buying better cattle and thinning your herd (removing weak cattle) is crucial for high delivery values.
- Unique breeds in delivery: Only different breeds count. Having 5 copies of the same breed counts as just 1.
- Building placement: Buildings are placed on designated spaces along the trail. Each player has their own set.
- Opponent buildings: When you pass an opponent’s building, you typically skip over it (some buildings have toll/interaction effects).
- Certificate level: Determines which cities you can ship to. Higher levels open more distant, valuable cities.
- Train advancement: Moving your train along the railroad unlocks station master bonuses and end-game VP.
- Auxiliary actions: Each location may offer bonus auxiliary actions that grow as you upgrade buildings and hire workers.
- Foresight spaces: Before Kansas City, there are spaces that let you preview cattle market cards or upcoming workers.
