Overview
G.O.O.T.M.U. (Get Out Of The Maze Unit) is a maze-building and navigation board game published by Jolly Games in 1992. Players create a randomly generated maze from tiles, then race to collect all three parts of their personal G.O.O.T.M.U. device scattered throughout the maze. The first player to collect all three parts and exit the maze wins.
Components
- 32 board tiles (double-sided maze tiles with paths and instructions)
- 4 colored pawns
- 3 G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces per player (matching pawn colors)
- Power tokens
- 1 die
- Instructions
Setup
- Each player chooses a colored pawn and takes the three matching G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces.
- From the pool of 32 board tiles, the first player draws tiles randomly and arranges them to create a square or rectangular maze board.
- G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces are placed at designated locations throughout the maze.
- Players place their pawns at the starting position.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Roll the die to determine movement distance.
- Move your pawn through the maze pathways up to the number of spaces rolled.
- Resolve the space you land on – follow any instructions printed on the tile.
- Collect G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces if you land on a space containing one of your pieces.
Actions
Movement
- Move your pawn along maze pathways up to the number shown on the die.
- You cannot move through walls.
- You may change direction during movement but cannot backtrack through the same space in a single turn.
Tile Rotation (Rolling a 6)
- On a roll of 6, you may choose to rotate the tile you are standing on or an adjacent tile instead of (or in addition to) moving.
- Rotating a tile changes the maze paths, potentially opening new routes or blocking opponents.
Power Tokens
- Power tokens are found throughout the maze.
- Collecting a power token gives you a special ability:
- Rotate a tile at any time (regardless of die roll).
- Choose your die number instead of rolling.
- Each power token is used once and then discarded.
Collecting G.O.O.T.M.U. Parts
- When you land on a space containing one of your three G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces, you collect it.
- You must collect all three pieces before you can exit the maze.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to collect all three of their G.O.O.T.M.U. pieces and reach the maze exit wins the game.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Tile instructions: Some tiles have special instructions that must be followed when landing on them.
- Maze changes: Tile rotation fundamentally changes the maze layout, making the game dynamic and unpredictable.
- Player interaction: Rotating tiles can deliberately block opponents’ paths or open your own.
- Random setup: Each game produces a different maze layout due to random tile placement during setup.
- Power token strategy: Holding power tokens for critical moments (opening a direct path to a piece or blocking an opponent near the exit) is key strategic play.
