Overview
Go for Broke! is a family board game where the object is the opposite of most games – you want to LOSE all your money. Each player starts with a million dollars and races around the board spending as much as possible. The first player to go completely broke wins.
Components
- 1 game board with money-losing spaces
- Play money in various denominations totaling $1,000,000 per player
- 2 dice
- Player pawns
- Spinner (for some editions)
Setup
- Each player receives $1,000,000 in play money, distributed in specific denominations.
- Each player places their pawn on the starting space.
- Choose a banker to manage the central money supply.
Turn Structure
- Roll two dice.
- Move your pawn clockwise the number of spaces indicated.
- Follow the instructions on the space you land on (usually spending money).
- If you cannot fully pay, pay what you can.
Actions
Landing on Spaces
Most spaces require you to spend money:
- Stock Exchange: Lose money through stock market crashes
- Horse racing / gambling: Bet and lose money at various venues
- Luxury purchases: Forced to buy expensive items
- Charity: Donate large sums
- Various money-losing activities
Trying to Spend Money
- You must follow the space’s instructions exactly.
- If a space says to pay a specific amount, you pay it to the bank.
- Some spaces involve spinning or additional dice rolls to determine the amount lost.
Receiving Money (the bad kind)
- Some spaces force you to COLLECT money, which is bad since you want to go broke.
- You must accept money when required.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to lose ALL their money (reach exactly $0) wins the game.
If you overshoot (would go below $0), you still make the payment and receive change, keeping you in the game.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- You cannot refuse to collect money from spaces that award it.
- You must make payments when possible, even partial payments.
- The game continues until someone reaches exactly $0.
- If you land on a space that would take more money than you have, you pay what you have.
- Multiple players on the same space is allowed.
- Exact rules vary slightly between editions (Selchow & Righter 1965, Winning Moves, etc.).
