Overview
Go Cuckoo! is a dexterity game where players build a nest from colored sticks inside a tin can, then try to balance eggs on the nest structure. Players draw sticks and attempt to find matching-color-ended sticks, placing them across the top of the can to create a nest platform. The first player to place all their eggs and successfully perch Kiki the Cuckoo on top of the nest wins.
Components
- 1 tin can (game container and nest base)
- 70 colored wooden sticks (both ends colored)
- 20 cuckoo eggs (divided among players)
- 1 Kiki Cuckoo figurine
Setup
- Divide the eggs equally among all players.
- Place all 70 sticks loosely inside the tin can, creating a tangled base structure.
- Place Kiki Cuckoo to the side – she will be needed at the end.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Draw sticks: Draw up to 3 sticks from the can, one at a time.
- Check for matching ends: Look for a stick where both ends are the same color.
- Place sticks: Lay drawn sticks horizontally across the top of the can to build the nest.
- Place an egg: If you drew a matching-color stick, place one of your eggs on the nest.
- If you did not find a matching stick within 3 draws, simply place the drawn sticks on the nest without adding an egg.
Actions
Drawing Sticks
- Draw sticks one at a time from the can.
- You may stop drawing after finding a matching stick (same color on both ends).
- Maximum of 3 stick draws per turn.
Placing Sticks
- Lay sticks horizontally across the opening of the can to form a lattice-like nest structure.
- Sticks should rest on the rim of the can and on other sticks.
Placing Eggs
- Only permitted if you drew a stick with matching colors on both ends.
- Place one egg from your supply onto the nest structure.
- The egg must balance on the sticks.
Penalties for Knocking Things Over
- Knock over a stick: Replace it; your turn ends immediately.
- Knock eggs inside the can: Take penalty eggs from the player who currently has the most eggs remaining.
- Knock eggs outside the can: You must take those fallen eggs as a penalty, adding them to your supply.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
- When you have placed all your eggs, you must place Kiki Cuckoo on top of the nest on your next turn.
- The first player to successfully place all eggs and perch Kiki Cuckoo on the nest wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Egg penalty source: When eggs fall inside the can, the penalty eggs come from the player with the most eggs remaining, not from the can.
- Kiki Cuckoo placement: You cannot attempt to place Kiki until all your eggs are on the nest. If Kiki falls off during placement, your turn ends and you must try again next turn.
- Stick matching: Only sticks where BOTH ends are the same color allow you to place an egg. Two-color sticks do not qualify.
- Dexterity challenge: The game becomes progressively harder as more sticks and eggs are placed, making the structure more precarious.
- Equal egg distribution: If eggs don’t divide evenly, remaining eggs are set aside.
Player Reference
Turn sequence: Draw up to 3 sticks > Place sticks on nest > Place egg (if matching stick found)
Matching stick: Both ends same color = place an egg
Penalties:
- Stick knocked over: replace it, turn ends
- Eggs fall inside can: take eggs from player with most remaining
- Eggs fall outside can: take those eggs
Win condition: Place all eggs + place Kiki Cuckoo on nest
