Overview
Fog of Love is a romantic comedy board game for exactly 2 players. Each player creates a character, and together the players explore a romantic relationship through a series of scenes (cards) played over multiple chapters. Players choose responses to relationship situations, building or breaking compatibility across personality dimensions. Each player has a secret Destiny card describing their ideal relationship outcome. The game can end in mutual happiness, heartbreak, or an amicable parting.
Components
- Character boards (2) with personality dimension tracks
- Trait cards (features, occupation, etc.)
- Scene cards (divided into chapters)
- Destiny cards
- Personality tokens
- Tutorial scenario cards
Setup
- Each player takes a character board.
- Each player selects 3 Feature trait cards for their partner (choosing physical and personality traits). Players reveal these simultaneously.
- Each player draws and chooses an Occupation card.
- Place personality tokens at the center of each dimension track on character boards.
- Shuffle Scene cards by chapter; arrange in chapter order.
- Each player receives a starting hand of Scene cards.
- Deal Destiny cards (each player picks one secretly).
Turn Structure
The game is played through a series of scenes across multiple chapters. Each chapter introduces new scene types and escalating relationship dynamics.
Playing a Scene
- The active player plays a Scene card from their hand face-up.
- Both players read the scenario and secretly choose one of the response options (A, B, C, etc.).
- Both players simultaneously reveal their choices.
- Resolve the effects: move personality tokens based on choices. Some choices give tokens for matching; others for conflicting.
Between Scenes
- Draw new Scene cards to refill your hand.
- Certain scenes trigger special events or chapter transitions.
- Players may choose to play Drama cards for additional effects.
Actions
Personality Dimensions
There are 6 personality dimensions, each tracked on a scale:
- Discipline (vs. Curiosity)
- Sincerity (vs. Extravagance)
- Sensitivity (vs. Gentleness)
Each response to a scene adjusts one or more personality dimension markers. Your final position on each dimension matters for your Destiny.
Destiny Cards
Each player has a secret Destiny describing their ideal endpoint:
- Unconditional Love: Stay together regardless of compatibility.
- Equal Partnership: Both characters balanced and compatible.
- Dominance: One partner’s needs dominate.
- Heartbreaker: End the relationship.
- Other destinies with specific requirements.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
At the end of the final chapter, both players reveal their Destiny cards. Each Destiny has specific conditions based on personality dimension positions and relationship status:
- If both players meet their Destiny conditions, both win.
- If only one player meets their conditions, only they win.
- If neither meets their conditions, both lose.
The game can also end if the relationship breaks apart during play.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Tutorial: The game includes a full tutorial scenario that teaches all rules through play. Strongly recommended for first game.
- Simultaneous Choice: All scene responses are chosen secretly and revealed simultaneously. Communication about strategy is part of the game, but binding promises are not enforceable.
- Drama Cards: Played between scenes for special effects like redraws or personality shifts.
- Breakup: If the relationship ends mid-game, play continues briefly for resolution, then scoring occurs.
- Multiple Scenarios: The game includes several pre-built story scenarios with different themes and complexity.
- Replayability: Different Feature traits, Destinies, and scene order create very different game experiences.
