Escalado is a mechanical horse racing game where model racehorses move down a long green fabric track powered by a hand-crank vibration mechanism. The vibrating track simulates the unpredictability of a real horse race. Players own horses, place bets, and watch the races unfold over a series of six races. The combination of ownership prizes and betting winnings determines the overall winner.
The full game consists of six races. Each race follows this sequence:
Before each race, players may place bets on any horse (or horses) to win. Players do not have to bet on their own horse. The bookie may adjust odds for each horse between races based on form in previous races (e.g., shortening odds on previous winners).
Place all horses at the starting line. One player (or the designated crank operator) turns the mechanical hand crank, vibrating the entire track. The vibration causes the horses to move down the track in an unpredictable fashion. The crank operator stops winding immediately after the first, second, and third horses cross the finishing line.
Before each race, players choose how much to wager and on which horse(s). Bets are placed with the bookie. Different bet types may include:
The bookie adjusts odds between races based on previous performance, making consistently winning horses harder to profit from.
Each player’s owned horse earns them prize money for top finishes regardless of bets placed.
The game ends after all six races have been completed.
The player with the most total money (from both ownership prizes and betting winnings) after six races wins.
