Overview
Equate is a Scrabble-like board game where players use number and operator tiles to form true mathematical equations on a grid board. Players draw tiles from a bag and place them to create horizontal or vertical equations that connect with previously played tiles. Points are earned based on individual tile values and premium board positions. The player with the highest score wins.
Components
- 1 game board with premium scoring positions (2S, 3S, 2E, 3E)
- Number tiles (various values)
- Operator tiles (+, -, x, ÷)
- Equal sign tiles (always available)
- Tile bag
- Score tracking materials
Setup
- Place the board in the center of the table.
- Put all number and operator tiles in the bag.
- Each player draws 9 tiles from the bag. An equal sign tile is always available as a 10th tile.
- Determine first player.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Form one true equation using tiles from your hand and place them on the board.
- The equation must be placed in a single horizontal row (left to right) or vertical column (top to bottom).
- At least one tile in your equation must be adjacent to a previously played tile.
- Score your equation.
- Draw tiles from the bag to replenish your hand back to 9 tiles.
Actions
- Place tiles to create a true mathematical equality (e.g., 3 + 4 = 7).
- Equations must contain exactly one equal sign.
- Equations may be extended by placing tiles on one or both sides of an existing equation, provided the result is still true and contains only one equal sign.
- Number tiles placed adjacent to each other form multi-digit numbers (e.g., 2 next to 3 = 23).
- Adjacent tiles running perpendicular to your equation must form either a complete numerical expression or a valid equation.
Alternative Actions
- Trade tiles: Instead of placing tiles, trade any number of tiles from your hand for new tiles. This scores 0 points for the turn.
- Form an expression only: Place tiles that form an expression (not a full equation). Scores 0 points but helps get rid of tiles.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Tile Scoring
Each tile has an individual score printed in its lower-right corner.
Premium Board Positions
- 2S: Double the individual tile score placed on this space.
- 3S: Triple the individual tile score placed on this space.
- 2E: Double the entire equation score.
- 3E: Triple the entire equation score.
Scoring Order
- Calculate individual tile scores first (applying 2S and 3S multipliers).
- Then apply 2E or 3E multipliers to the equation total.
Bonus
- Playing all 9 number/operator tiles in one turn earns 40 bonus points (the equal sign does not need to be played for this bonus).
Premium Position Rules
- Premium position bonuses are received only once, by the player who originally places a tile there.
- When forming an equation that includes previously played tiles, you score those tiles’ individual scores but do not gain their premium bonuses again.
Game End
The game ends when the tile bag is empty and one player uses their last tile. That player adds to their score the total of all individual tile scores remaining in opponents’ hands. Each remaining player subtracts their held tile scores from their own total.
If no player can go out, the game ends when each player passes once consecutively. Each player subtracts their remaining tile scores.
The player with the highest score wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Vertical equations and numbers are read top to bottom.
- Do not turn corners to read equations.
- All tiles played in one turn must be placed within a single horizontal or vertical equation.
- The subtraction symbol is used only for subtraction, not for negation. Negative number tiles are a separate component (in the Advanced Tile Set).
- Unnecessary leading zeros are not allowed (e.g., 05 cannot represent 5).
- Fraction tiles can be combined with whole number tiles to form mixed numerals (e.g., 2 next to 1/2 = 2 1/2).
- The game can end at a specified time if agreed upon, but all players must have had the same number of turns.
