Overview
Dorfromantik is a cooperative tile-placement game where players work together to build a beautiful landscape. Players take turns placing hexagonal landscape and task tiles, trying to fulfill residents’ tasks by creating areas of the right size, while also building the longest possible railroad and river. Points earned across games unlock new tiles hidden in mystery boxes, creating a campaign experience.
Components
- 48 Landscape Tiles (green windmill on back) featuring: forest, grain, village, river, railroad, crossing, sheep, and flag icons
- 25 Task Tiles (white comment bubble on back) in 5 types: forest, grain, village, river, railroad
- 25 Task Tokens (small, matching the 5 task types; fronts show numbers: 1x4, 2x5, 2x6 per type)
- 1 Campaign sheet pad (20 sheets)
- 1 Score sheet pad (50 sheets)
- 1 Insert tray
- 5 Mystery boxes (unlocked throughout campaign)
Setup
- Shuffle all task tiles face-down. Form stacks at the edge of the playing area.
- Shuffle all landscape tiles face-down. Draw 3 and return to the box unseen. Form stacks from the remaining tiles.
- Shuffle the 25 task tokens face-down, separated by color/symbol. Place next to task tile stacks.
- Set aside scoring and campaign sheets for end of game.
- Do NOT open the 5 mystery boxes until instructed.
Turn Structure
Determine a starting player. Take turns clockwise.
On your turn:
- Check task tile count: If fewer than 3 task tiles with tokens are in the play area, reveal 1 task tile. Otherwise, reveal 1 landscape tile.
- Place the revealed tile in the play area following placement rules.
- Check for completed tasks.
First 3 turns: Always reveal a task tile.
Actions
Tile Placement Rules
- All tiles must form a contiguous area (at least 1 edge touching an existing tile).
- Rivers and railroads must be continued: You cannot connect a river edge to a non-river edge (same for railroad). You can start multiple separate rivers or railroads.
- Forest, grain, village, and meadow edges can be placed freely (no matching required).
Task Tiles
When you reveal a task tile, immediately reveal 1 matching task token and place it on the tile. Then place both into the play area.
Completing Tasks
Each task token has a number (4, 5, or 6). The corresponding area (or railroad/river) must consist of exactly that many tiles for the task to be fulfilled.
When fulfilled, move the task token to the edge of the play area (sorted by type). This is a point source.
Failing Tasks
- If a later tile placement causes an area to exceed the task token’s number, cancel the task and return the token to the box.
- Same if the area is completed (closed) with fewer tiles than required.
Flags
3 landscape tiles have flags (green = forest, yellow = grain, red = village). At end of game, you only score points for flagged areas that are closed (no open edges).
Scoring / Victory Conditions
At game end (when all tiles are placed), score:
- Completed task tokens (points vary by number)
- Longest railroad (contiguous)
- Longest river (contiguous)
- Closed flagged areas
Total points determine your high score. Use campaign sheets to track progress across games and unlock mystery boxes at point thresholds.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- You may place multiple task tokens in the same area.
- You may NOT place a task tile next to an area if it would immediately make the area exceed the token’s number at the moment of placement.
- You may NOT place a task tile that would immediately close an area with fewer tiles than the token requires.
- However, future tiles placed by others may cause an area to exceed or fall short, which cancels the task.
- If the task tile stack is empty, only place landscape tiles for the rest of the game.
- Discuss placement as a group, but the active player makes the final decision.
- Mystery boxes introduce new tile types and tasks as you progress through the campaign.
