Overview
The Betrayer’s War is the second Act (major expansion) for Descent: Legends of the Dark. One to four players continue the journey of Brynn, Chance, Galaden, Kehli, Syrus, and Vaerix as they struggle to save their kingdom. This expansion is not standalone – it requires the Descent: Legends of the Dark core game and uses the companion app. The expansion introduces new hero cards, Legend cards, a companion character (Indris), and new tokens (umbra and shroud).
New Components
- New Act 2 hero cards (double-sided, one per hero with new art and abilities)
- Legend cards (double-sided, unlockable progression cards)
- Companion card and miniature (Indris)
- New enemy miniatures and cards
- Umbra and Shroud tokens
- New map tiles
- Campaign booklet / app content
Setup Changes
- When playing The Betrayer’s War, you must use the new Act 2 hero cards for each hero (replacing the Act 1 versions).
- All skills, weapons, and other cards unlocked during the Act 1 campaign can still be used.
- The companion app must be updated to include Act 2 content.
- Set up scenarios using the app’s guidance for each mission.
Rule Changes
Act 2 Hero Cards
- Each of the six heroes has a completely new double-sided hero card with different abilities on each side.
- Players choose which side to use, locking in that choice for the campaign.
Legend Cards
- Legends are double-sided cards unlocked during the campaign that cost Experience (XP) to equip.
- Unlike skill cards, you cannot flip Legends during play – you choose one side when you unlock them, and that choice is permanent.
- Legend abilities are always in effect with no fatigue or action cost.
Companion: Indris
- Indris is the Act 2 Companion – a separate figure controlled by a hero during their activation.
- The Companion has its own sculpt and double-sided card (like a hero).
- The Companion moves and acts independently but is activated during a hero’s turn.
New Tokens
- Umbra Tokens: Grant special bonuses to certain characters when used with specific upgrade cards.
- Shroud Tokens: Allow heroes to avoid being targeted by enemies, providing a dodge-like defensive mechanic.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Not Standalone: Requires the Descent: Legends of the Dark core game and companion app.
- Persistent Campaign: Character progression carries over from Act 1. All unlocked cards remain available.
- Permanent Legend Choices: Choosing a Legend card side is irreversible, making these decisions weighty.
- App Required: The companion app manages enemy behavior, story progression, and scenario setup.
- Hero Card Requirement: Act 2 hero cards are mandatory – you cannot use Act 1 hero cards during The Betrayer’s War campaign.
