Overview
Darwin’s Dice is a light card and dice game for 2-6 players. Players simultaneously reveal cards and compete for dominance. The winner of each round becomes “Darwin” and rolls the dice for the next round. The game combines simultaneous card play with a competitive twist involving dice rolling.
Components
- Deck of cards (numbered/ranked)
- Dice
- Rules card or booklet
Setup
- Shuffle the card deck.
- Deal a starting hand to each player.
- Determine who starts as Darwin (first dice roller).
- Place dice and remaining deck in the center.
Turn Structure
Each round:
- Card Play: All players simultaneously select and play a card face-down.
- Reveal: All cards are flipped face-up at the same time.
- Comparison: The player with the strongest card wins the round.
- New Darwin: The winner becomes Darwin and rolls the dice to determine conditions for the next round.
Actions
Playing Cards
- Choose a card from your hand and play it face-down simultaneously with all other players.
- Cards have different strength values or special abilities.
Becoming Darwin
- The player who plays the strongest card each round becomes Darwin.
- As Darwin, you roll the dice to set conditions, bonuses, or challenges for the next round.
Dice Rolling
- Darwin rolls the dice, which may modify the next round’s rules, provide bonuses, or create special conditions.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Players accumulate points by winning rounds. The first player to reach the target score (or the player with the most points when the deck runs out) wins the game.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Simultaneous Play: All cards are revealed at once, so no player has an information advantage during the play phase.
- Darwin’s Advantage: Being Darwin grants the dice roll, which may give strategic advantages for the next round.
- Ties: When two or more players play equally strong cards, a tiebreaker rule applies (specific to the card types or a secondary dice roll).
- Light Game: Designed as a quick filler game with simple rules and fast rounds.
