Overview
Connect 4x4 is an expanded version of Connect Four featuring a double-sided grid. Two players compete to be the first to create a line of four checkers of their color horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A Connect 4 can occur on either side of the grid or by weaving in and out of both grids.
Components
- 1 double-sided grid
- 68 checkers (17 of each of 4 colors, for 2-4 player games)
- 8 blockers (2 of each color)
- Instructions
Setup
- Assemble the grid and insert it into the end supports.
- Make sure the sliding lever is positioned so the bars prevent checkers from falling.
- Each player takes all 17 checkers and 2 blockers of their chosen color.
Turn Structure
Players alternate turns. On each turn, a player drops one checker or one blocker into any slot at the top of the grid.
Actions
- Drop a Checker: Drop 1 of your colored checkers down any of the slots in the top of the grid. The checker will land on the lowest available position.
- Drop a Blocker: Instead of a checker, drop 1 of your 2 blockers to block your opponent’s progress. Blockers count as neutral pieces and do not contribute to any player’s line.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player to get four checkers of their color in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins. The four-in-a-row can occur:
- On one side of the grid
- On the other side of the grid
- Weaving through both sides of the grid
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Each player has only 2 blockers per game; use them strategically.
- A Connect 4 that weaves through both sides of the grid is a valid win.
- If neither player achieves four in a row and all checkers are played, the game is a draw.
