Overview
Conflict is a Parker Brothers war game where 2, 3, or 4 players compete on a grid-based board representing land and water territories. The objective is to eliminate all opponents by capturing all their pieces or occupying their home circles. Players command land pieces (infantry), an anti-aircraft gun, and battleships across a board of land and water areas.
Components
- 1 playing board with land and water areas, divided into squares
- 2, 3, or 4 sets of playing pieces (each set in a different color), each containing:
- 10 land pieces
- 1 anti-aircraft gun
- 5 battleships
- 2 dice
Setup
- Open the board on any table. Players sit on different sides of the table.
- Each player places all of their pieces in their starting area (home circle) in the corner of the board: 10 land pieces, 1 anti-aircraft gun, and 5 battleships.
- The dice determine who goes first based on the highest total thrown.
Turn Structure
On each turn, a player:
- Rolls both dice and moves any pieces along the land route (brown squares) to the land area and water route (blue), or to the water areas (blue squares). Pieces on land may not enter water areas and water pieces may not enter land areas unless going by other routes.
- To enter a zone, the player places pieces in the home circle and moves the adjacent square to the other area.
A player must always move two pieces, as the sum of the dice may never be applied to a single piece. Exception: if a player has only one piece left, they may move it the total of both dice.
Actions
Movement of Pieces:
- All pieces may move in any direction: horizontally, vertically, or diagonally – and not necessarily in a straight line.
- Each die is applied to a separate piece. For example, on a throw of 3 and 5, one piece moves 3 squares and another moves 5 squares.
- A player cannot move their pieces into their own starting circle or through it.
- A player may not land on a square occupied by their own piece.
Value of Pieces:
- Any land piece may capture any other land piece, or an air piece.
- A plane (anti-aircraft piece) resting on a square may capture any other land or water piece; it can also capture an air piece or be captured.
- A water piece can capture only other water pieces.
- Captured pieces are permanently removed from the game.
Doubles:
- If a player rolls doubles, they get another throw on that turn.
- If the same player rolls doubles three times in a row, they discard a set of doubles, have no further throw, and must place the pieces they moved back where they started.
Re-entry of Pieces:
- At any time during the game, a player may throw a total of 6 (or two 6s) on the dice while having pieces in their starting area. They then move those pieces into their starting area in the home circle. They then move this piece on any other of their subsequent turns.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The player who eliminates all opponents by capturing all their pieces or occupying their home circles wins the game.
- When one player reaches an opponent’s starting circle (home base), the opponent’s pieces in the home base are captured. Pieces outside the base are also captured by the arriving player.
- The capturing player takes all of that opponent’s pieces and all the pieces that opponent previously captured, adding them to their own force.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
Mines:
- Circles in the water area represent mines. A player’s water piece may not cross a mine area. However, a player may send their own or another player’s water piece onto a mine, destroying it.
- An airplane may fly over mines. When an airplane is blown up, if it passes over its own mine, the water pieces of both players are destroyed and each player receives new water pieces.
Alliances:
- Each player plays for themselves, although alliances may be made at any time. Partnership games may be played if agreed upon before the start of the game.
Bridges:
- Water pieces may move on the bridges shown on the board. Water pieces on the brown squares of bridges cannot be captured by land pieces.
- Land pieces may move on the bridges but cannot capture water pieces on the bridges.
