Colomino is a tile-laying game where players place multi-colored tiles onto a shared board, matching colors along edges of adjacent tiles. Players score points by strategically placing tiles so that colors align, with bonus scoring for completely enclosing areas with matching colors. The game combines spatial reasoning with color-matching in an accessible package.
Components
Multi-colored tiles (various shapes with colored edges/sections)
Game board or starting tile
Score tokens or track
Setup
Place the starting tile or board in the center of the play area.
Shuffle and distribute tiles to each player (or create a shared draw pile, depending on variant).
Determine a starting player.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
Select a tile from your hand or draw pile.
Place the tile adjacent to at least one existing tile on the board.
Score points for color matches along shared edges.
Draw a replacement tile if applicable.
Actions
Place a Tile
Place one tile onto the board so that it shares at least one edge with an existing tile.
Colors on shared edges must match — you cannot place a tile where colors conflict.
If you cannot legally place a tile, you draw from the supply or pass.
Score Points
Each correctly matched color edge scores points.
Enclosing an area (surrounding it completely with matching-color tiles) scores bonus points.
Strategic placement to block opponents from scoring while maximizing your own matches is key.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Points are scored each time a tile is placed, based on the number of color matches.
Bonus points for enclosing areas with continuous color boundaries.
The game ends when all tiles have been placed or no legal placements remain.
The player with the most points wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
Color matching is mandatory: You cannot place a tile where colors on adjacent edges do not match.
Three-sided tiles: Some tile shapes have three sides, allowing for scoring on multiple edges simultaneously.
Blocking: Strategic blocking of opponents by claiming key positions is a valid tactic.
Unable to play: If a player cannot legally place any tile, they must draw or pass (depending on the variant being played).
The game scales well at all player counts; more players creates a more competitive board.
