Overview

Cineplexity is a party game for movie buffs published by Out of the Box Games. Players race to name a movie that matches two category cards simultaneously. With 315 cards across nine categories, the game tests movie knowledge, quick thinking, and creative associations. One player serves as the director each round, while others compete to shout out valid movie titles first. The game accommodates 4-10 players (or more informally).

Components

Setup

  1. Shuffle all 315 cards into a single deck.
  2. Choose a starting director.
  3. Determine the point target based on player count (suggested: 6-10 cards to win, adjustable).

Turn Structure

First Round:

  1. The director draws 2 cards and places them face-up on the table.
  2. All other players simultaneously race to name a movie that fits both card descriptions.
  3. The first player to call out a valid movie title wins the oldest of the two cards (as a point).
  4. A new card replaces the won card, so one card carries over to the next round.

Subsequent Rounds:

  1. The director draws 1 new card to pair with the remaining card from the previous round.
  2. Players race to name a movie matching both cards.
  3. Winner takes the older card; a new card replaces it.

Actions

Name a Movie: Call out a movie title that satisfies both displayed card criteria. The director judges validity. Examples: if cards show “with a limp or phobia” (Character) and “contains a flashback” (Production), a valid answer might be “Memento” or “The Usual Suspects.”

Stumped Rule: If no player can name a valid movie, the director adds a third card. Players now only need to match any 2 of the 3 displayed cards.

Director’s Judgment: For subjective Critique cards, the director has final say on whether a movie answer fits the criterion.

Bluffing: Players may argue that the director should accept a movie they have not seen, but the director’s decision is final.

Scoring / Victory Conditions

Each won card counts as 1 point. The first player to accumulate the target number of cards wins. The target varies by player count (suggested 6-10 cards, but groups may set their own target).

The director role may rotate after each round or stay with one player for multiple rounds.
