Overview
Catan Dice Game is a roll-and-write game where players roll six resource dice and use the results to build roads, settlements, cities, and knights on a personal game map. Each die shows one of six resources (brick, lumber, wool, grain, ore, gold). Players roll up to three times per turn, Yahtzee-style, setting aside and re-rolling dice. Built structures earn points, and the player with the most points after all scoring track boxes are filled wins.
Components
- 6 resource dice (each showing: brick, lumber, wool, grain, ore, gold)
- 1 pad with 60 double-sided sheets (Island One on one side, Island Two on the other)
- 1 rules booklet
Setup
- Give each player one sheet (Island One / green side for the first game).
- Each player needs a pencil or pen.
- Give the 6 dice to the youngest player (starting player).
Turn Structure
Starting with the first player, each player takes a turn consisting of:
1. Rolling the Dice (up to 3 rolls):
- Roll all 6 dice.
- After the first roll, set aside any number of dice and re-roll the rest.
- After the second roll, set aside more dice (or pick up previously set-aside dice) and roll one final time.
- You may stop after the first or second roll if satisfied.
2. Building:
- Use the rolled resources to build structures on your game map.
- Mark built structures by circling or filling in their symbols.
- You may build multiple structures in one turn if resources allow.
- Enter the total points earned this turn in the next empty Scoring Track box.
- If you build nothing, you must enter “X” (worth -2 points).
Actions
Building costs:
- Road: 1 brick + 1 lumber = 1 point each
- Knight: 1 ore + 1 wool + 1 grain = 1 point each (ascending order)
- Settlement: 1 brick + 1 lumber + 1 wool + 1 grain = 3-11 points (ascending order)
- City: 3 ore + 2 grain = 7-30 points (ascending order)
Building rules:
- Roads must be built in sequence, each connecting to a previously built road. The first road (starting road) is pre-built.
- Settlements must be adjacent to an already-built road and built in ascending point-value order.
- Cities must be adjacent to an already-built road and built in ascending point-value order.
- Knights must be built in ascending point-value order.
Resource Joker: Each built knight has a resource icon below it. Once per game, you may use that resource as a joker (change any die to that resource). Mark the knight to show the joker has been used. The 6th knight has a “?” and can substitute any resource. You may use multiple jokers in a single turn and may build a knight and use its joker in the same turn.
Gold Trade: After finishing rolling, you may trade 2 gold results for 1 resource of your choice (turn 1 gold die to show the desired resource).
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The game ends when all players have filled every box in their Scoring Track (15 turns each). Each player totals the numbers in their Scoring Track. The player with the highest total wins.
Each empty turn (no builds) costs -2 points.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- A structure’s point value is shown on its symbol on the game map.
- Resource jokers are one-time use. Once crossed out, they cannot be used again.
- You can use 2 gold trades in a single turn (costing 4 gold dice for 2 different resources).
- Gold trade and resource jokers can be combined in the same turn.
- Island Two (on the reverse side) has a different map layout with its own rules for a more advanced game.
