Overview
Burg der 1000 Spiegel (Mirror Mansion / Castle of 1000 Mirrors) is a memory and deduction game where players explore a castle filled with mirrors, trying to find specific treasures. Players move a shared pawn around the castle, look through windows to spot treasures reflected in moveable mirrors, and collect jewels for each treasure correctly found. The player with the most jewels at the end wins.
Components
- Game board (castle layout with windows and mirror slots)
- Moveable mirrors (placed in the center of the board)
- Treasure windows (removable tiles showing different treasures)
- Player pawn
- Dice
- Jewels (victory point tokens)
- 1 open window space
Setup
- Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Insert all treasure windows into their slots around the castle, with one slot left open.
- Place the mirrors in the center of the board in their starting positions.
- Place the player pawn on the starting space.
- Give each player a starting supply of jewels (or place the jewel supply nearby).
Turn Structure
On each turn, the current player:
- Chooses any treasure window and lifts it out (showing it to all players), then swaps it with the open window position.
- Rolls the dice and moves the pawn that number of spaces clockwise.
- The space landed on indicates which treasure the player must find by looking through the corresponding window.
- The player may optionally move up to 3 mirrors in the center of the board (must move at least 1).
- The player looks through the window to try to spot the required treasure reflected in the mirrors.
- If successful, the player earns jewels.
Actions
Swap a Treasure Window:
- Choose any treasure window around the castle.
- Lift it out and swap it with the currently open window position.
- This changes which treasures are visible from which directions.
Move the Pawn:
- Roll the dice and move the shared pawn clockwise that number of spaces.
- The space you land on shows a specific treasure you must find.
Adjust Mirrors:
- Before looking through your window, you may move up to 3 mirrors in the center of the board.
- You must move at least 1 mirror.
- Mirrors reflect the view from windows, so repositioning them changes what treasures are visible from each window.
Search for Treasure:
- Look through the window at the pawn’s current position.
- If you can see the required treasure reflected in the mirrors, you successfully find it and earn jewels.
- If you cannot see it, you earn nothing this turn.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Players earn jewels for each treasure they successfully find. The game ends when a predetermined condition is met (typically when the treasure supply runs out or a set number of rounds have been played). The player with the most jewels wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Memory Element: Since treasure windows are swapped around during play, remembering which treasures are in which positions is crucial to success.
- Mirror Strategy: Knowing how the mirrors reflect is key. Players who understand the mirror angles can consistently find treasures.
- Mandatory Mirror Movement: At least 1 mirror must be moved each turn, even if the player would prefer not to change anything.
- Open Window: There is always exactly 1 open window slot. Swapping creates a shifting puzzle of treasure positions.
