Overview
Bug-opoly is a Monopoly-style board game with an insect theme, published by Late for the Sky Production Company. Players buy, sell, and trade their favorite insects while learning amazing bug facts. The game follows standard Monopoly mechanics with insect-themed properties and flavor text. It includes both original and one-hour variant rules.
Components
- Game board (Monopoly-style track with insect-themed properties)
- Player tokens (bug-themed)
- Property deed cards (with insect facts on the back)
- Play money
- Dice
- Insect-themed houses and hive equivalents
- Chance-style event cards
Setup
- Place the board in the center of the table.
- Each player selects a playing token and places it on “GO.”
- Distribute starting money equally to all players.
- Shuffle event cards and place them in their designated spot on the board.
- Place property deeds, houses, and money in the bank.
- Determine first player by rolling dice.
Turn Structure
On each turn:
- Roll the dice.
- Move your token clockwise that many spaces.
- Resolve the space you land on:
- Unowned property: Buy it or let it go to auction.
- Owned property: Pay rent to the owner.
- Event space: Draw a card and follow its instructions.
- Tax space: Pay the indicated amount.
- Special spaces: Follow specific instructions (Go, Jail, Free Parking, etc.).
Actions
Buy Property:
- When landing on an unowned insect property, you may purchase it at the listed price.
- Flip over the deed to read a fun fact about that insect.
Pay Rent:
- If you land on a property owned by another player, pay rent. Rent increases if the owner has a complete color set or has built structures.
Build Structures:
- When you own all properties of a color group, you may build structures (insect-themed equivalents of houses and hotels) to increase rent.
Trade:
- Players may trade properties, money, and other assets with each other at any time.
Event Cards:
- Draw and follow instructions when landing on event card spaces. Effects may include gaining or losing money, advancing to specific spaces, or other events.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The game ends when all but one player have gone bankrupt. The last player with money and property remaining wins.
One-Hour Variant: Set a timer for one hour. When time expires, each player totals their cash plus the mortgage value of their properties. The wealthiest player wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Insect Facts: Each property deed includes educational insect facts, making the game both entertaining and informative.
- Standard Monopoly Rules Apply: Go, Jail, Free Parking, and other standard Monopoly mechanics are present with insect theming.
- One-Hour Variant: The short game variant prevents games from dragging on, by ending after a set time and scoring by total assets.
- Auction Rule: If a player declines to buy an unowned property, it may go to auction.
