Overview
Brainstorm is a party-style category game where players race to name items that fit given categories. Cards define the categories, and for each valid answer a player gives that matches an answer on the category card, they advance on the track. Unusual or creative answers may earn bonus advancement. The first player to reach the finish wins.
Components
- Game board with a track
- Category cards (each listing a category and several valid answers)
- Player pawns
- Timer or other pacing mechanism
Setup
- Place the game board in the center.
- Each player chooses a pawn and places it on the start space.
- Shuffle the category cards and place them in a draw pile.
- Determine a starting player.
Turn Structure
On each turn:
- Draw a category card and read the category aloud.
- Players (either in turn or simultaneously, depending on the variant) call out items that fit the category.
- For each answer that matches one listed on the card, the answering player advances 1 space.
- For particularly creative or unusual valid answers, the player may advance 2 spaces.
- Play passes to the next player or a new card is drawn.
Actions
Name Items in a Category:
- When a category is read, players must quickly name things that belong to that category.
- Each valid answer (one that appears on the category card) earns 1 step forward on the track.
- Especially unusual or creative answers (if valid) earn 2 steps forward.
Challenge:
- If a player’s answer is disputed, the group or game leader decides whether it qualifies.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The first player (or team) to reach the end of the track wins the game. Advancement is earned entirely through naming valid category items.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Duplicate Answers: If multiple players give the same answer, typically only the first to say it gets credit.
- Time Limit: Some variants include a timer to limit how long players have to brainstorm answers.
- Unusual Answers: The 2-step bonus for unusual answers adds incentive to think creatively rather than just listing obvious items.
- Scalability: The game works with varying player counts, and can also be played in teams.
