Overview
Bonnie and Clyde is the 5th entry in the Mystery Rummy series. Players are FBI agents competing to catch the notorious outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow by playing melds and layoffs of Evidence (Location) cards in a rummy-style card game. The game features a board with 10 Locations and a Crime Spree car that moves as melds and layoffs are played, with cards played at the car’s current location scoring double. The Ted Hinton card adds strategic depth with three powerful ability options. First player to 100 points wins.
Components
- 60 Evidence (Location) cards
- 1 Bonnie Parker card
- 1 Clyde Barrow card
- 15 Ted Hinton cards
- 1 Gameboard (with 10 Locations)
- 1 Crime Spree car figure
Setup
- Place the gameboard between players. It has 10 Locations from Kaufman Texas to Gibson Louisiana.
- Place the Crime Spree car on Location 1 (Kaufman, Texas).
- Take 8 random cards from the deck (without looking) along with both Bonnie and Clyde cards. Shuffle these 10 cards and place 1 facedown under each of the 10 Locations on the board.
- Choose a dealer randomly. Dealer shuffles the deck and allows the player on their right to cut.
- Deal cards facedown:
- 2 players: 10 cards each
- 3 players: 9 cards each
- 4 players: 8 cards each
- Place remaining deck facedown as the Case File (draw pile). Flip the top card face-up next to it as the FBI Files (discard pile). Only the top card of the discard pile is visible; players may not look through it unless a card allows.
Turn Structure
Play proceeds clockwise from the player to the dealer’s left. Each turn has 3 steps in order:
1. Draw (Mandatory)
Draw 1 card from the Case File (draw pile) OR take the top card from the FBI Files (discard pile).
2. Play (Optional)
You may play Ted Hinton cards and/or Evidence cards in any order:
Ted Hinton: Play at most 1 per turn. Choose one of 3 effects:
- Draw 2 cards from the Case File.
- Take any 1 card from the FBI Files (discard pile) without showing anyone.
- Look at the card under any Location; take it or leave it (if Bonnie or Clyde, you must leave it).
After resolving, place the Ted Hinton card on the discard pile (this is NOT your end-of-turn discard).
Evidence Cards: Play melds (3+ cards of the same Location) or layoffs (single cards matching an existing meld in front of any player). Two same-Location cards can be laid off individually (2 layoffs) or together (1 layoff).
When playing a meld or layoff at the Crime Spree Car’s Location:
- Place the cards sideways in front of you (they score 4 points each instead of 2).
- Look at the card under that Location without showing anyone. If it is Bonnie or Clyde, you must take it and play it face-up. Otherwise, take it to your hand or leave it.
- Move the Crime Spree Car: melds move it 1 Location toward Gibson Louisiana; layoffs move it 1 Location up or down.
When playing at a Location the Car is NOT on:
- Place cards normally (not sideways; worth 2 points each).
- Look at the card under that Location. If Bonnie or Clyde, leave it. Otherwise, take it or leave it.
- Move the Car the same way (melds: 1 up; layoffs: 1 up or down). Do not move the Car off the board.
3. Discard (Mandatory)
Discard 1 card face-up to the FBI Files. This ends your turn.
Actions
Melds
A meld is 3 or more Evidence cards of the same Location played face-up in front of you. Each meld played moves the Crime Spree Car 1 Location toward Gibson Louisiana.
Layoffs
A layoff is playing 1 or more Evidence cards matching a meld already face-up in front of any player (including yourself). Each layoff played moves the Crime Spree Car 1 Location up or down (your choice).
Bonnie and Clyde Cards
These special cards are hidden under Locations at the start. When you look at a Location card and find Bonnie or Clyde:
- If the Crime Spree Car is at that Location: you must take it and play it face-up.
- If the Car is elsewhere: you must leave it.
Each Bonnie/Clyde card in front of you is worth 10 points.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Ending a Hand
A hand ends when:
- Any player discards their last card, OR
- The last card of the Case File is drawn (that player finishes their turn normally, then the hand ends).
Scoring
- Each Evidence card played sideways (at the Car’s Location): 4 points
- Each Evidence card played normally: 2 points
- Each Bonnie or Clyde card: 10 points
- Cards remaining in hand: 0 points (no penalty)
Bonus
The player who ends the hand by discarding their last card earns bonus points equal to the Crime Spree Car’s Location number (1-10). No bonus if the hand ended because the Case File was exhausted.
Shut Out
If the player who ended the hand has BOTH Bonnie and Clyde cards in front of them, they score normally but all other players score 0 for that hand.
Game End
The game ends when one or more players reach 100+ points after a hand. The player with the most points wins. If tied, play another hand. If no one has 100 points, play another hand. Each new hand uses a fresh setup.
Variant
For a longer game, play to 200 points.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Discard pile: Only the top card is visible. Players may not search through it unless a card specifically allows.
- Ted Hinton discard: Placing a used Ted Hinton card on the discard pile does NOT count as your mandatory end-of-turn discard.
- Crime Spree Car movement: Never moves off the board. If at Location 10 (Gibson), a meld cannot move it further up; layoffs can still move it down.
- Multiple layoffs: Two cards of the same Location laid off together count as 1 layoff (1 Car move). Laid off separately, they count as 2 layoffs (2 Car moves).
- Looking at Location cards: Happens every time you play a meld or layoff, regardless of whether the Car is at that Location.
- New hands: Shuffle all cards (including unrevealed Location cards from the board). Reposition the Crime Spree Car to Kaufman, Texas.
