Overview
Bauernroulette (Farmer’s Roulette or Tyrolean Roulette) is a traditional German dexterity game originating from peasant culture. Players spin a top in the center of a wooden playing surface, sending six balls rolling into numbered hollows around the perimeter. Points are tallied based on where the balls land. The game is simple, portable, and suitable for all ages, combining luck with a small element of spin technique.
Components
- Wooden playing surface (quadratic or octagonal) with a circular depression in the center and numbered hollows around the perimeter
- Bowl-shaped chambers in each corner outside the main playing surface
- 6 balls (4 white, 1 red, 1 green)
- 1 spinning top
- Score sheet or tokens for tracking points
Setup
Place the wooden playing surface on a flat table. Place all six balls (4 white, 1 red, 1 green) in the center of the circular depression. Agree on a target score (commonly 1000 points). Determine the first player.
Turn Structure
Players take turns in clockwise order:
- Place Balls: Arrange the six balls in the center of the surface.
- Spin the Top: The active player spins the top in the center.
- Balls Scatter: The spinning top sends the balls rolling outward into the numbered hollows and corner chambers.
- Score: Tally points based on where each ball landed.
- Next Player: Pass to the next player.
Actions
- Spin the Top: The active player places the top in the center and spins it. The top’s rotation sends the surrounding balls flying into different hollows and chambers.
- Scoring: Each hollow around the perimeter has an assigned point value. Balls that land in these hollows score their associated points. Red and green balls may have special scoring rules (doubled value or bonus points). Balls that end up in corner chambers score their chamber value.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Each ball landing in a numbered hollow or chamber earns points equal to that position’s value. The red and green balls may score at enhanced rates. The first player to reach the agreed-upon point total (typically 1000 points) wins. If multiple players exceed the target in the same round, the player with the highest score wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Balls Remaining in Center: If a ball does not leave the center area, it scores zero points for that turn.
- Balls Off the Board: If a ball leaves the playing surface entirely, it scores zero.
- Red/Green Ball Bonuses: In many versions, the red ball scores double the hollow value, and the green ball scores triple or has a special bonus.
- Spin Technique: While largely a game of chance, experienced players may develop techniques for spinning the top that influence ball distribution.
- Simultaneous Scoring: All six balls are scored simultaneously after the top stops and all balls have settled.
